Rockford P5002 amp problem with thermal light and low voltage

I have a Rockford P5002 that was in a different vehicle and am now putting in a 95 Subaru Impreza. All connections are new (bought a kit from Crutchfield) but when it powers on, the "thermal" light comes on. It was just turned on, so doubt it's overheating. I followed another post and checked the wiring coming in with a multimeter. I got about 7 volts for both the B+ and the remote turn on. I checked my battery straight and it's 12 when not on and up to 13ish when engine is running, but even then, just over 7 on the amp. That's a big difference. No matter what I check, can't seem to get amp off thermal. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello rbenwalker,

The voltage drop may not be in the actual power wire itself. The same reading on both the B+ and remote terminal probably points to a bad or high resistance ground. Try a different ground point or make sure there isn't any corrosion, paint or anything else preventing metal to metal contact.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Rockford P5002 not getting enough power

7 volts will not be sufficient for the amp either for power or remote. Also check to make sure you speakers wires are not crossed. If its goin it to protect mode immediately the amp is detecting a fault and is not turning on.

The thermal and power lights are on soon as i hook the amp up to the power

check your connections, this usually indicates that you have a short circuit but also make sure that your earth strap is securely fastened to a clean metal fixing.this could well be the cause of your problem.

Thermal light goes away when ground added

Doesn't sound like anything is wrong. If the thermal light is on before you have the ground hooked up then the amp is probably getting a small amount of electrical ground from the shielding on the RCAs or its mounting to the chassis of the vehicle allowing the amp to "barely turn on" (not enough ground). I can imagine this would make the amp think something is wrong (ie: thermal light) . May I suggest that you do not try to turn any amplifier on without ALL appropriate wires connected correctly.

I have a Rockford Fosgate Puch 1000 watt amp "thermal" problem

With your multimeter set to DC volts, the black meter lead on the ground terminal of the amp and the head unit on (so the amp will have remote voltage applied), touch the red lead alternately to the B+ and remote terminals of the amp. If the voltage is below ~11 volts, you need to check the wiring feeding whichever line is too low.

If the voltage remains near or above 12v, disconnect all speaker wires from the speaker terminals of the amp and disconnect signal cables from the amp. If it powers up without the thermal LED being lit, the wiring needs to be checked. If it still indicates that it's in thermal protection, it needs to be serviced. A local repair shop will be the quickest. Rockford will email you the schematics.

P5002 rockford fosgate

If you hook up speaker and hear a pop you more then likely have 1 ch blown causing dc on output. You can use multimeter and measure voltage for both ch,s between positive and negative terminals..One channel will more then likely measure 0v and the other one which is defective wll measure a dc voltage. These amps have what are called mehsa bars which output transistors are mounted to. Need to contact Rockford fosgate 800-669-9899 to arrange for flat rate repair.

Rockford Amp - When grounded, both power and thermal lights go off

You shouldn't have the power wire connected to the amp without having the amp's ground terminal connected to a good ground. With some amps, it will damage the head unit.

Does the amp power up normally if you connect power and ground and then apply remote voltage (turn the head unit on)?
