Question about Boating

My outboard mercury has been sitting several years now. Now it seems to be getting too much oil into the engine. And not enough gas when I try to plane out. Is there a gas-oil mixing valve befor the electric fuel pump on a v6 merc?(95-96 150xr1)

Your engine is fuel injected the fuel system is clogged with bad gas. fuel is proven to only stay stable for 60 days. after that it begins to turn to varnish. I can lead you through the repair easily, but i do suggest you go to this website to get picture diagrams so you can see how the engine parts are lined up. upper right had corner of page click search with pictures. select product line. select column Mercury, force, mariner and other outboard select mercury mariner scroll down to V-150XR1 next page. verifiy the serial number then click on it. ok now you have a list of picture, discription and part numbers to view. TOOLS (1) A compression gauge (2) a spark gap tester.(3) A Clymer service manual for your engine. (you can purchase from your local dealer. I know all these are expensive but if your going to be a outboard owner you will always need them. TROUBLESHOOTING (1) check compression. I'm giving you a average numbers. Look at your Clymer manual for more specific numbers. all cylinders need to be over 100 lbs and equal each other within 5 lbs. If you have good compression (2) check spark. use a spark gap tester, all cylinders should jump a half inch gap.replace spark plugs, I know spark plugs probably don't look bad but this is a outboard. Fresh spark plugs means less resistance for the ignition system. The ignition system is week compared to automotive.(3) Replace all fuel filters. there may be one on the boat. there is a fuel filter under engine cover on the starbord side replace it. Test drive boat. I know it is time consuming but I am making sure you don't spend time and money when you dont need to. If problem is still there (4) the fuel filter you replaced under the engine cover follow the fuel line to the vapor seperator.(website fuel managment system breakdown reference numbers 21-25) (5)on the bottom of the seperator is a hose leading from the fuel seperator to the electric fuel pump. NOTE, what i want you to do is verify fuel is getting to the vapor seperator and to the electric fuel pump. because there is a needle and seat in the vapor seperator and a filter in the hose that stops up. NOTE the filter in the hose (reference number 48 on website)make sure you remove hose completely and check by blowing threw it(6)with hose removed use primmer bulb and force fuel into the engine. fuel should pour through fitting that the hose was connected to. If not we have more work to do. I'm hoping you filter is stopped up in the hose. IF THERE IS FUEL FLOW AND FILTER STOPPED UP put everything back together with new filter and test. if no improvement you have pressure test to follow in you clymer manuel. follow each step about fuel pressure test. you are testing the electric fuel pump a $600.00 unit. IF NO FUEL FLOW FROM FITTING and hose filter replaced( why put the old one back?) (7) You fuel vapor seperator needle and seat is stopped up. refer to websit pictures. reference numbers 23 and 24.(8) there is six screws to remove the top of the seperator. a o-ring that can be saved but i would suggest ordering a new one.WARNING float level is setting is critical be careful not to bend float or rod(9) Remove float and needle and clean seat thoughly with carb cleaner. use primer bulb and pump fuel. Does fuel flow? if yes replace needle and float and use primer bulb again. gently close needle by pushing on the float. you should be able to stop and start the fuel flow with the float and needle. if you have any worries order new parts.(10) after you have verified fuel flows and stops through needle and seat. look inside of seperator housing is there any sedement or varnish. IF CLEAN reasemble vapor seperator. IF DIRTY the vapor seperator also receive oil from oil pump at the bottom of the seperator look for hose and fitting. make sure oil fitting is clean if ANY DOUGHT ABOUT OIL DELIVERY REPLACE VAPOR SEPERATOR YOU CANNOT GET THE OIL VALVE SEPERATE IT COMES IN A KIT. ok I have taken you through the basics everything else is in the Clymer manual you need to purchase. good luck

need the year of manufacture as some 2 stroke units have oil injection that automatically mixes the oil in the correct ratio for engine rpms otherwise it is 50:1 ( 50 parts fuel to 1 part oil)

What year is a mercury 35hp outboard motor with serial number2491265.Is the motor 2 or 4 stroke

the serial number begins 2487558 and continues past 2491265 and as the beginning serial number denotes the year , your engine is 1969 model
it shows as a 2 stroke with auto oil injection
check the heads
if the plugs are in the flat of the head and there are no rocker covers it is 2 stroke
talk with a mercury /mariner service center

50:1 But if your doing mostly low rpm cruising (trolling) then you could reduce that a bit to 75:1 to help reduce smoke. If you do mostly mid to higher rpm cruising, then 50:1 (1 pint to 6 gallons. )
Or 200mls in 20 liters if your Canadian.

that depends on the age of the motor .if erroring it's better to have too much oil than noot enough sine that can seize an engine up

Why won't my Mercury Optimax 150 outboard start up. Engine turns over just fine, and there's 2 beeps to the throttle box.

I usually do cars and trucks, but if you are getting an electronic beep, you might go online and refer to an engine Manual for what you own. You may have a low oil lockout for the crankcase on a 4 cycle or a low oil cutoff alert for a 2 cycle with an automatic oil feed mixer. Some transition of inboard-outboard technology to outboards can include tilt lockout so that you can not start up in gear. Most prevent the starter from turning, but could keep the engine from firing if they want to wire it that way. With the "beeps" it would seem to be a Code.

Outboard troubleshooting. I have a 75 hp Mercury with 2 carbuerators. Serial # 6559142 it's around a 1989 model.. Problem= tank bubble pumps up tight...sits for a minute and gets soft...when I pump it up...

Sounds like the fuel pump isn't working, you can buy service kits though quite often corrosion will prevent you from removing the valves.. or it could simply be the fuel cap isn't venting, remove fuel cap and see if the engine continues to run!

If it would not move (rotate) you had a pump failure. A bad pump will often pump enough to go fast but nothing at idle so will quickly sieze.

Waht is the engine oil to gas ratio for a mini tiller

The fuel ratio is determined by the oil and not the machine. Not all

oil is the same. When a manufacturer recommends a fuel ratio,

they are trying to direct you to the oil that they offer for sale. Over

the years 2 cycle oil has been offered in 16:1, 32:1, 40:1 and 50:1 .

Unfortunately for the user it is easy to get confused when selecting

oil. It is not difficult if you just think about it. There are two major

differences in 2-cycle engines. There are water cooled and there

are air cooled engines and the oils are entirely different. Water

cooled (outboard) engines run at much lower temperatures and at

much lower RPM's. It is necessary for outboard oils to burn during

the combustion cycle. In this situation the oil turns to smoke so

that the oil is not deposited in or on the water. Air cooled engines

run at a much higher temperature and must not be used with

outboard oils. In an air cooled engine the oil should leave the

muffler in liquid form. If the oil turns to smoke it is not able to

lubricate the engine and a very undesirable carbon deposit is left

behind leading to engine failure or stuck piston rings.

Since a top quality mixing oil will cost $12 or more for a six pack

(that comes out to well over $100 a gallon of oil) there is little

wonder that so many companies want a piece of that pie. Cheap

oils no bargain even if it is free. If the oil says it is for outboards,

lawn mowers, string trimmers, and chain saws, they are telling you

that they know nothing about 2 cycle engines and only want to take

your money.

You should choose an oil whose brand is that of an engine

manufacturer. Obviously these companies are not in the oil

business but they want to make sure that they do not cause

warranty claims from an inferior oil. The life of you engine is

dependent on choosing a good grade of oil. You should pick an oil

that you trust and that you can purchase on a consistent basis.

Unlike gasoline, oil does not deteriorate with age. It is better to buy

enough to last you a year or two than it is to change brands every

time you run out.
