Question about Sony Televison & Video

1 Answer

I'm getting a great picture with my converter box, but no sound.

Dear FixYa,

I have a Sony Trinitron color TV, purchased June, 1999; Model #KV-20FV10. With the digital converter box hooked up I got a beautiful picture but no sound.

One of your experts suggested I run the sound through my VCR. I did this (I think) and still no sound. I connected audio/video cables (red, yellow, white) from the box to the VCR; and another set from the VCR to the TV. I get no picture until I connect the antenna to the box and the box to the antenna port on the TV...then I get a picture, but still no sound. I tried running my VCR hooked up to my TV alone, without the box, and still no sound. Is this proof the sound in this TV is dead? If so, is there a fuse that could have blown when the digital went live? I hate to give in, but unless you have another pointer or so, I may be forced to buy a new TV. Thanks. Looking forward to your response.

This may sound like a rediculous thing to ask you to do, but I've seen these types of things happen.

With the antenna to the box and the box to the antenna port on the TV setup, go into the TV menu - audio section and make sure that the speaker is set to 'ON'. Also, make sure that 'SAP' mode is not on.

Try plugging headphones in the headphone jack and see if you get audio there.

You should also check the instructions for your digital box to see if there is any audio modes that may need adjusting.

Why does a Sony Trinitron when on Video 3 works fine with dish. When on channel 3, color goes to b & w, then snaps back to color. on a regular cycle ?

your converter box has a channel generator for the channel #3 and you tv has a tuner set to ch#3 that and a coax wire . every part of that system has to be working correctly to send video ,color, sound if even one part of the system is a little off you run in to problems . most likely your problem is with the converter box channel generator . contrast that to when you get the signal from your video input . with that simple system you just take video from the video board in the box and send it directly into the video board in the tv .....a lot less to go wrong .

If you have sound from your set using a VCR, the TV isn't at fault. And I warn you, don't be too quick to dispose of your old Sony, I help those who have sets bought within the last year or two that are failing everywhere; these have sophisticated power supplies that demand very high quality components to function reliably and mfrs. are loath to spend the extra pennies and as a consequence, they are failing way too soon but often just after the warranty expires.
You just need to ferret out the right audio paths to complete your system if you find that the set works OK with a VCR or DVD player.
The conversion hasn't done any damage to your Sony, you are only not connected as you need to be.

I have a Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-27FS100 TV

You will need the converter if you are dependent on broadcast reception; in other words, use an antenna with your set. Cable and satellite sources may or may not 'go digital' at some point in time so if you are using one of these, check with your cable or satellite company.
If you decide to buy one of the pretty, new flat panel sets, buy the converter and DON'T toss your Sony. Store them in a dry place as backups. The flat panel sets are crapping out all over so you might do without TV when it fails.

Sony 27"TV will not turn on

The picture tube on your tv is dead, you need to replace it. It probably will be worthing just purchasing a new set, because the cost of repairing it will be close to the purchase of a new one.
