Question about Air King Dryers

1 Answer

I manage an apartment building that was built in 1964. Several of the bath exhaust fans need to be replaced. These are Berns Air King fans but I've not been able to find a model number. Any ideas on where I can find the model number and/or replacement motors?

Replacing the entire fixture might be a better choice than repairing the originals; they aren't that costly new.
If you want to pursue replacement motors, Johnstone Supply would be an excellent source if you have on in your area. It is a 'wholesale' supply company for trades-people but I have never been turned away and I've found their counter folks exceptionally helpful. For one thing, these motors are kind of generic so there are several brands that will have the same mounts, etc.
They also have a huge paper catalog you can request or pick up in their stores.
Try them:

Why did SPT Portable Air Conditioner stopped blowing cold air?

Unit needs to be taken apart and washed out , also check to see if motor turns freely by hand , clean base of unit fans / blowers and drain ports / channels . Check outdoor motor to see if bearings are tight or fan overheats and cuts off if so replace outdoor motor .

I have an Air King exhaust fan above my stove. The exhaust fan no longer comes on when the switch is turned on. What could be problem and is the solution a repair-person solution or is it something I can...

We do have things called oil build up and dust. The two bond together very well and this just might be the cause. You need to have it cleaned out and rather get someone in who knows what they are doing. It might cost a few bucks but at the end of the day will be cheaper than having someone working on it who does not know what they are doing.

Fan continues to run even after shutting switch off

The power isn't being turned off to the fan. You will need a qualified electrician to root out the switch problem. Less likely the motor is shorting to ground, but this should actuate a GFCI...

Looking for repacement globe for bath room exaust fan

Hi there, What I would do without knowing what kind of exhaust fan you have is Google it online. Or, if you have the make, model number, etc., and take it down to your nearest home depot, lowe's, etc., or heating and supply company close to you. These are pretty common exhaust fans, so you should have no problem finding a replacement. Good Luck with this, and if you have an other problem regarding your fan, feel free to contact me and I'd be willing to help you out.  - Jim

Is this fan loud?

The fan is about as loud as the standard powder room bath fan at 4.0 sones, (though it is moving more than twice the air as those fans).

OLD wall timer Model E1020 ticks really loud

You probably can't get the existing mechanical timer to operate any quietier, since it's old and likely starting to wear out. You can either swap the timer out for a new automatic digital timer, or install a standard single pole switch in its' place.

I believe the code you refer to regarding the fan having to be wired onto a timer switch was a local requirement from many years ago.

Some local jurisdictions have impossed more stringent requirements, but frankly, having an exhaust fan is normally a good idea. If the fan is vented into the attic space, it can cause some serious problems in cold weather with condesation of the warm, moist exhaust air.

Building Code requires that bath fans be piped/vented to the outside of the house and not into the attic space.

There are newer preset timer switches that will turn on the exhaust fan for a fixed amount of time, based on which button you push. These are great as they will run the fan long enough to remove condensation from showers, etc.

If you're going to replace the timer, disconnect or turn off the breaker or power to the switch. Then simply install a new timer or switch by connecting the black supply wire to the bottom of the single pole switch, or to one of the black leads of the timer. Then connect the black wire going to the fan to the top screw on the single pole switch, or the other lead on the new timer. The white (neutral) wires should already be connected with a wire nut inside the box. Connect the ground wire to the ground wire in the box and if the switch box is metal, attach the ground wire to the box with a green grounding screw too.

You can now operate the fan with either a manual on/off switch or the new digital timer, whichever you chose to install.

Exhaust fan running slow

sounds like the compressor is turning off cause of high pressure. check the coil that the exhaust hose connects to, if dirty clean it. if the fan is not blowing enough air threw the coil the unit will build up high side pressure and cut out, but will turn back on when pressure drops. if that dont help, maybe the fan motor is bad or needs taken apart and oiled.
