if you're playing tapes that played fine before, then try a different vcr to be sure, then smash yours in the most enjoyable way you can think of and visit your local Goodwill store. But read some other replies before you actually take me seriously, VCRs aren't my specialty. 90% sure there's a bad head in it though.
This may sound too easy, but have you used a head cleaner tape on the player lately?? They can do wonders. The ones with a liquid and a tape where you add a few drops to the tape and then run it for 1-2 min. or seconds, follow the directions.... may do wonders.
