This may sound too easy, but have you used a head cleaner tape on the player lately?? They can do wonders. The ones with a liquid and a tape where you add a few drops to the tape and then run it for 1-2 min. or seconds, follow the directions.... may do wonders.

If you're playing tapes that played fine before, then try a different vcr to be sure, then smash yours in the most enjoyable way you can think of and visit your local Goodwill store. But read some other replies before you actually take me seriously, VCRs aren't my specialty. 90% sure there's a bad head in it though.

I have a Canon ZR90A and started noticing horizontal gray lines displaying across the screen when it plays back. What is causing this?

The most common cause of horizontal lines during playback is dirty heads/tape path. If you have a head cleaner tape, try playing it for about 5 to 10 seconds and then try your tape again. Repeat as necessary. Try not to run the head cleaner for long periods of time because you may wear down your heads quicker (cleaning cassette is somewhat abrasive). If you do not own a head cleaning tape, I highly recommend purchasing one. Sony (in my opinion) makes the best miniDV head cleaning cassette. We use this brand in our repair shop and they last for years. I have posted a link to the particular tape I am speaking of. Your local camera/camcorder shop may have these for sale.

VHS Video Tape - Picture Roll.

Picture roll is caused by the frame rate being out of sync with the play back device. If the tape was recorded at say 25 f/m and is being played back at 26f/m. If you can, adjust the frame rate until the picture stands still.

VCR sound works but no picture

It could be that the video heads are just clogged.
Get a known good video tape and put it in the unit and let it just play and play and play. Quality video tapes have head cleaning substances built into the tape. If this does not work, get a Scotch Black Watch tape head cleaner. If that does not work the the heads are bad or some other problem.

LCD shows stripes thus the picture is not complete

Mine was similar - with vertical black lines on playback. Visit Bristolcameras.co.uk, enter your make and model and ask for a head cleaner. They sent me one within 4 days and that was over the Christmas period. Reasonably priced too (£3.50 + p&p) and the whole head cleaner can be used up to twice once the tape has gone from beginning to end.

Lines across the sreen when i play back the tape

Someone here recommended on another post to put the lense cap on & videotape the blackness in a quiet room for 5-10 mins. I tried this as a last resort & it worked. When I played back the tape, no more skipping or gray lines. I had 4-5 SOLID gray lines with skipping video & audio in between on every tape I put in. I think the person who helped me solve this said that it was a result of the tape alignment going off.

Canon camocorder thick gray lines on ever recording

Supreemwun,
Canon support was of no help. They ****! To fix the problem this is what I figured out.

  1. Before you start filming what you want record or just advance the tape 10 secs or so.
  2. Record/ video whatever you planned.
  3. Now when the thick grey lines come up on play back don't freak out.
  4. Simply rewind the tape to the beginning and record briefly in the blank portion at the beginning (careful not to tape too long as to tape over your intended recording).
  5. Rewind and play the thick grey lines should now be gone.
How did I figure this out just a fluke. No cleaning, no spray pretty simple. At first did not understand it but it works EVERYTIME for me. I'll deal with it until I get around to buying a new HD video camera and it won't be a Canon. Hope this helps.

Play back problem

Your camera playback heads appear to be dirty. You can purchase a head cleaner cassette from an electronics store or take it to a service centre where they will clean the heads.

Check that the tape itself is not damaged, as this can cause the same symptoms.

On playback, the video has gray lines across it

Someone here recommended on another post to put the lense cap on & videotape the blackness in a quiet room for 5-10 mins. I tried this as a last resort & it worked. When I played back the tape, no more skipping or gray lines. I had 4-5 SOLID gray lines with skipping video & audio in between on every tape I put in. The person who helped me solve this said: "the speed isn't linked with the last time you recorded on it. Frames have an A/B part to them. If A is hitting B instead of A, a line appears. I would try the head cleaner first, then blacken your used tape (keep lens cap on and record in a quiet room) and try that."
My camera is a Canon zr80 digital camcorder. (Called Canon, they had me reset it & then recommended sending it in).
