Bad compressor or bad capacitor??

I have an 8 year old RUUD A/C 10 Series Model UAKA-024. The Copeland Scroll compressor is not kicking on. It tries to but only for about a second and then shuts off. It continues this cycle every 30-45 seconds. Is the compressor bad or is it the capacitor?
Thank You.

Look at the capacitor. if it is leaky or swollen it is most likely bad

Same check capacitor for swelling or lizards. capacitor is the round or oval metal thing with 2 or 3 wire connections on it on the outside unit (inside has one to possibly). if you have an amp meter check how many amps its drawing on startup. if it is anywhere close to 80 or 100amps then its locked. check the wiring to the compressor and also the relay for the condenser (outside unit).

Ruud 5 Ton UAKA Condensor fan running but compressor won't start. Internal thermal overload cycle.

Have you checked the wiring going to the compressor to make
sure it is not melted? Next, are you
able to put your hand on the top of the compressor? Check to see if it is hot or cold. You might have a bad run capacitor so let the
unit turn on, wait about 5 minutes, turn the unit off, and then tell me if the compressor
is hot or cold to the touch. Next, are
you comfortable with a meter?

My 4 year old Ruud home a/c compressor stopped working. inside fan blows but compressor won't turn on...what can I do prior to calling the gas company who installed the unit...

Ruud parts warranty from factory is 5 years, the capacitor has possible gone out, it will be in the contol compartment on the out side unit and is a dual run capacitor that controls the compressor and fan motor. Recommend if capacitor is bad to replace entire capacitor. As Stated above the parts are under warranty if under five years old. To verify age the date code is in the serial number after the "F" **** week/year of manufacture. Also outside unit has independent power supply so check fuses if any and circuit breaker.

I have a Ruud 10 seer achiever air unit that does not blow cold air. The pipe is not cold and the fan does kick on, but the compressor does not.

Check the capacitor. You will need to remove a wire from it and check it with a multimeter with the capacitor check function. If it looks swollen it's probably bad. If it's the 3 terminal type that works for the fan and compressor just 1 side can be bad.

New copeland compressor wont start

Hello,By all means install a hard start kit on the cap.Your wiring is correct.A scroll compressor usally doesn't need a start kit but I have seen 5 ton units that take one.Check the compressor tag and make sure the compressor is not a 3 phase motor!

Have a Ruud Achiever Model number UAKA-037JAZ that won't run since yesterday. When the air kicks on it simply makes a buzzing noise and the fan doesn't spin. Can anyone help?

try spinning by hand when the unit make the buzzing sound. to see if the capacitor is bad. If the fan runs replace the cap. If not motor probably is bad. See if it spins freely. this is a good starting place. need to check if the buzzing is the contactor and there is no power to the condensor. The contactor will buzz even though the main breaker is off or tripped
