Cannot find hard disk drive

Only the 'C' drive shows up with 4GB of space (almost all of which is used). I have used the PC Doctor application to test the 2nd hard disk drive (it passes fine) but I can't even find it.

On a laptop the second drive you refer to is usually there for RESTORE functions or as a DIAGNOSTIC PARTITION.

DO NOT DELETE THIS OR ITS CONTENTS !
If you do you may not be able to restore your laptop should you need to for any reason.

I would personally recommend that you do a major clean up on your C drive.
Also consider an external drive.

If you must have more space then a hard drive upgrade is your best solution.

this is a relatively simple process for a good repair shop and would leave you with a spare hard drive that you could place in an external enclosure as LARGE additional storage.

I do these types of upgrade on a regular basis and even the hidden partition is transfered safely to a new larger drive with such as the Acronis software.

Did you look in the Windows Disk manager? How about the Device Manager. You should see it in both of those. If not in there, then check your BIOS for them. Maybe it is not recognized in your startup BIOS. Generally, you hold down the F6 or F8 key while restarting to get into the BIOS. Check your manufacturer's website for which key to use if those don't work and make sure the disks are detected and listed properly there. If that doesn't work, select return to default setting in the BIOS.

My sandisk cruzer 4 GB pendrive ws working fine but now whenever i try to format\copy\cut it shows location 0 with used space 0 free space 0 what should i do

Your flashdrive usually shows 2 drives when inserted to your computer, one is the U3 drive and the other one is the removable disk drives. U3 drive is your separate partition for the U3 system and in order for you to store, copy, format your flashdrive, you should be selecting the removable disk drive, not the U3 drive. U3 is a read only memory drive that is responsible for your U3 to work (just like portable applications). Hope this helps.

Hi, I have WD 1TB Elements SE. When I checked the usage space on the partition after I plug in the drive, it shows a total capacity as 1,000,200,990,720 bytes (931 GB) and it shows 921,753,505,792 bytes...

If you have a 32bit system, it is expected to have miscalculations, a 32 bits can only go up to 4Gb for calculations (that is, 2^32 = 4'294'967'296 bytes) a 64bit system can make calculations to 2^64 bytes this is also why you couldn't copy a file larger than 4Gb in a 32bit operating system...
So, if you are running a 32bit OS, you should expect a discrepancy for the total space of the Hard Drive and the amount it shows (that's the 93Gb you are missing as total capacity).
Another reason why it can show you incorrect calculations are damaged sectors on the hard drive it-self. These will present themselves either as occupied memory or missing memory.
So, you should expect some miss calculations and you can expect some damaged sectors on the hard disk (a external drive spins on and off too often, eventually damaging sectors... its a problem of physical drives).
In the end, your disk might be fragmented, so run a disk analysis and a defragmentation on the disk so it can recalculate.
A note: A disk is like a shelve, you put things where there is space, if you remove things, that space will be open, and if you want to put something there it has to be the exact size or small enough to fit there. This effect, when things are small enough leaves blank spaces unusable, consuming space on the hard drive and making the access of files slower, this is fragmentation. In order to expand your disk life expectancy you should run defragmentations...
To run a defragmentation, go to START, write "Disk Defragmenter", choose your disk and run and analysis and defragmentation.

The problem you are talking about is most probably of the virus infection. Try to format your pen drive in your system and you can restore back your pen drive.

I receive a no operation system message while booting

Buy a new hard disk drive! Use the 2 golden Gateway, Applications, Drivers, & Operating System disc, also known as Restoration DVD to reinstall your Gateway programs & operating system. After that, reinstall your backups.

How much disk space do you need? Why buy a 320 GB HDD if you only use 4 GB? So, keep the bytes down if you don't need them and that will keep the costs down, too!

The Gateway support discs can be had at: www.Gateway.com/Support .

External Hard Drive not Accessible after Windows Vista Update

Assuming that the external hdd is physically working fine, everything is pointing to a damaged boot sector.

You can get back most (if not all) your data stored in your external drive with the help of an application called: Pc Inspector File recovery.
Its a freeware.
Here is the link: http://pcinspector.de/Sites/file_recovery/download.htm?language=1#

Simply install it on your C:\ drive, and follow the prompts.

Reformatting.

hi there,
you can Format your drive on a Windows machine as "FAT32" and it will be usable both under Mac OS X and Windows. the only thing to make note of is there are some limitations on the FAT32 format, like the 4GB filesize limit and certain naming restrictions.

You can reformat your drive by opening Disk Utility and then reformatting it using that application. in Mac OS X

- In Disk Utility, select the disk.
- Click Erase.
- Choose format from the Volume Format pop-up menu
(select the windows based format).
- Type a name for the disk or volume.
- Click Erase.
- You can use the drive on both the mac and a PC by choosing MS-DOS from the Disk Utility application when you're about to reformat.
