Question about LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB 7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive
Don't panic too much, as stressful as this can be you have not yet lost anything. Step one, if the light blinks you have power, if you aren't getting any warning issues and it doesn't show up, chances are the circuit board in the Lacie may have fried.
Go to your local PC shop and ask the techs there to extract the actual hard drive from the lacie enclosure and test it in a new enclosure. If this works, no biggie, by the new enclosure and you're on your way.
If it doesn't work in the new enclosure then the problem is in the hard drive itself which is more serious but can still be dealt with.
If it fails in the new enclosure comment back and let me know I will refer you in to a facility in SoCal or a smaller less expensive one in Canada if you can wait a week longer to have your files back.
For the future, one you have your drive working or your files recovered remember that us data recovery specialists NEVER trust any drive. They can and do fail so as a recovery pro myself I have 3 inhouse levels of data, Data on the machine it's created on, all those machines back up to my home server and then it backs up to an external similar to your lacie. I also exchange externals every couple weeks with my father who lives a few miles away so if the house was burgalerized or god forbid burned down I will still have all my data to within two weeks at dad's house.
I do this a bit more severley than most people but I also deal with crying people on the phone every day who are either happy to have their files back or sad because they cannot afford the process required to retrieve them.
Let me know how you make out with the new enclosure and if it fails wether you'd like a 1-2 week turn around time for a little more money or a 2-3 week turn around for less money.
