Question about LaCie F.A. Porsche (301177) Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a Lacie 250 GB hard drive. My computer can't find/access.

I have a Lacie 250 GB hard drive. It used to work fine, but now my computer is only recognizing something called "Seagate." I don't have a seagate external hard drive. Also, in the disk management section of the control panel, there is nothing listed in the "file system" area under disk "F." i.e. for the Recovery Disk on my computer, Disk D, FAT32 is listed under the "file system" section I think that my Lacie external hard drive used to be disk F, but not it looks like "F" is only referred to as "volume" And it says there are 232 free GB, so I'm not sure (praying this is not the case) that everything got deleted somehow, because I had data on the external hard drive and there shouldn't be that much empty space. Also, on the start menu, I'm not able to get the the "my computer" area, presumably because something is wrong with my external hard drive. I'm really hoping I didn't lose everything but want to try everything that I can. I'm using Windows XP on a gateway laptop that is about 3.5 years old.

I should also mention that in the disk management section (control panel, computer management, disk management), there is a disk "F" listed, that says it has 232 GB of capacity. When I right click and go to properties (in the bottom screen, section, not in the top screen section) it's recognized as "Seagate" although I have a Lacie hard drive. In the top screen section, when I right click on the F drive (it says it's healthy), then go to tools, then go to error checking, tick the two boxes, then click start, nothing really happens. It doesn't look like a checking process actually occurs.

    Hi Chris,

Thanks very much for your help, I appreciate your response. I think I will probably try to find a pro to recover the data. It?s too bad it?s expensive but I really don?t want to lose the data and would like to try to recover it. I live in Boston, Massachusetts (in the middle of the actual city, near the capitol building). I would gladly look into a place that you recommend. There is a Best Buy somewhat close by, and I know their ?Geek Squad? does this kind of thing, but I?m not sure if they?re the most affordable. Thanks again for your help Chris.

Thanks again Chris. Does Armor-IT have a website that I could check out? I took a quick look at CBL's. Do you know if Armor's success/recovery rate is on par with CBL? If Armor has a very high recovery rate as well, I'm thinking I'd probably go with Armor because time is not as important as the cost in this case. I can wait a few extra weeks if it means saving a few hundred dollars. My name is Mark and my email is markdotknepleyatgmaildotcom
    Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for all the info, it really helps us help you when we have the full picture.

The Seagate drive you are seeing is the hard drive inside the Lacie Enclosure. The fact it is showing up in disk management is a good sign for getting your files back. The fact that it shows as empty with no format type listed means that either the partition was deleted or damaged. This would be akin to loosing the microfishe in your local library. All the data is likely still on the drive but windows has no way of knowing what is there or where it is.

In either case the data can generally be recovered by a pro with speciallized software. In some cases you can do this yourself with similiar, less expensive software but I always warn Askers that this software requires significant knowledge to operate and you cannot recover the files back to the same drive therefor you must have another drive with at least double the space free of the data on the drive to do it yourself.

Let me know which approach would suit you better, if you choose the do it yourself method I can suggest software for <$100 that you can try but it carries inherent risk of damaging the data if you make any mistakes. f you choose to have a pro do this for you reply with your Country, State and City and I will recommend someone for you. For this type of failure recovery varries but usually runs $150-$500 depending on the volume of data you have.

In either case DO NOT format the drive or attempt to use it for anything in the mean time as every operation that writes to the drive runs the risk of overwriting your data and rendering it unretrievable.

Hope this Helps FixYa,

Chris

    Hello again Markma,

Although Geek Squad at the local bestbuy is the closest I have not heard good reviews as a whole of their new recovery services. They use a simpler method than some businesses so the price is $400-$500, but from the customers I have heard back from I have heard only 50% success and in those cases only 80-90% of the data is being recovered on average.

From my experiences you will have the best results for your dollar using either CBL in Armonk, NewYork(much closer to you), or Armor-IT in Canada.

CBL is a bit faster, mostly due to not having to clear customs both ways during shipping, about 2 weeks on average. They accept most forms of payment and average $700 for this type of recovery. Their success rate is 95% on this type of recovery with 98-100% recovery of your files in my experience.

Armor-IT takes 3-4 weeks(2 weeks + clearing time in customs), they accept Cheques and Paypal only, no credit cards, average for this type of recovery is $400.

So what it comes down to is how fast do you need the data back? If you can afford to wait a week or two longer and would rather save a few bucks let me know and I'll refer you to Armor-IT, if you need it yesterday and money isn't a big deal, I'll have you in touch with CBL by morning. Either way please reply back with your first name and either a contact # or email address to pass along to my contact with the choosen company. When replying you will have to put a space between each number or type your address like mynameatmyispdotcom as our system will not allow phone #'s or email addresses to be typed out to prevent web crawler programs from stealing them for marketing agencies.

I'll keep my eye open for your reply,

    Chris

    Hi Mark,

Armor-IT is about 65% on this type as well with 96-100% recovery on average. In both cases if there "easy" methods do not work they will offer more intensive and expensive methods as an option which can be into the thousands but if time is not a factor I always use AIT.

As for their site they did but have gone to doing several federal contracts in Canada and as such moved their facility to a more secure location and dropped their old website. As far as I know they haven't yet put up the new one. I know they have an advertisement that cycles up on our site but it no longer includes a weblink.

I will pass your information onto AIT's techs and have one of them email you their company info and sign in procedures. They work pretty long hours so I wouldn't be surprised if you hear back tonight.

SOURCE: i wish to use the seagate hardrive to back up

Im not sure why you want Fat32 but with that old file system a partitition cant be larger than 32GB otherwise it wont let you format with Fat32. You can create as many partitions as you like maybe have some Fat32 and some NTFS if you like. Just typy in disk management where you normally do a search or run with XP and that will let you organise all of your partitions. Cheers and please vote

SOURCE: convert ntfs to fat32

you have to format your hard drive using a third party disc to erase everything on your hard drive

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system

windows will ask what format you want to format in NTFS or FAT32

(note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to your failsafe or optimized defaults)

after windows has loaded

your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation

the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd

during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS?using the arrow keys load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

hope this helps you

Lacie extern. hard drive is recognized, but I can't access files

Try connecting the Lacie to another computer, if it doesn't work then the hard disk may need to be formatted using Disk Manager. I suggest you format as a primary partition in FAT32.
If it doesn't work then it is possible that the hard drive in the Lacie has failed.
To test the hard drive, remove it and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If it deosn't detect it as an external drive and you connot open folders and files then it is faulty.
You can install a new hard drive in the Lacie and then format in FAT32
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Formating hard disk

IF the old PC motherboard will recognize the drive while booting up, Windows 98 will also see the drive after boot-up. You may have to reformat the drive into smaller partitions.

All you have to do is physically install the drive in your old computer and attempt to boot. After the computer boots up, if the drive does not show up shut down and put the drive back in your old computer. Use the manufacturer's partitioning software available on their website to change the drive from one 250 Gb partitions to five 50 Gb partitions.
