Question about Computers & Internet

4 Answers

I thought I already asked it??? Here goes again, I simply need to determine what my WEP key is (that is what my NEW HP Office Jet Pro 8500 is asking for. I was told that I could simply connect the printer, load the software into laptop and I would be good to go. I do have a wireless network in my house with my Qwest 2wire router and Dell Desktop but do not think I should even need them. The HP is picking up my network though, but not just my laptop seperately. All I know is I need to print from my laptop to my new printer in about 10 minutes. Much thanks.

Problem is that it is a secure network and I do not want to lose that> Unfortunately through many moves I have no idea who set it up and I also do not want to lose the ability to get my email and Intenet from my laptop throughout the house. I thought that with this HP I would not neet anything more than the device and my Toshiba laptop to connect? If I try to reset to factory settings 1) will I need to know those, and 2) will I still be able to use my laptop the same as I am now with the current secured network enabling me Internet and email functionality?

On the HP it has recognized my current network in the house that I do not know the WEP key to be able to use my Toshiba Laptop to connect with the new HP 8500 Wireless Pro Printer. All I need is the WEP key and I did not think that I would have to go through my current network to be able to make this to work. I told the HP salesperson that I just had this Laptop and I needed to be able to wirelessly print in the house (he knew nothing of any other newtwork) from the toshiba laptop to the HP. I do not want to lose all security with my network with the desktop or lose or have to reset anything on any computers to get this one HP to work. Is it not possible for me to simply deal with the two devices, and not my current network, and get them to connect? If not there has to be an easier way to uncover the WEP key that obviosly was set up by ex-employees over a year ago and lost in many moves the last year. Any ideas?

Look guys and girls, if you had read what I have already done, I would not be responding to this. I simply need the WEP key for a brand new HP wireless printer. I am to hook that up and use my Toshiba laptop to connect (which has wirless) and just print, that is it. Forget about other networks or computer, one computer to a printer, that is it...or is that too much to ask?

OK. What I would suggest is that you contact your provider to change the password for your network, so you'll then know the password / WEP key.

Then, you'll need to reconnect any other computers connected to your network and enter the new password.

Hope this helps.

If you can connect it with an ethernet cable that would be the fastest way if you have an emergency.

To find your WEP key you will need look at the label on it.
The serial number of your 2Wire gateway is
used as the network name (SSID). Beneath
the serial number is a ten-digit number which
is used as the WEP key. These are
located on the bottom of your gateway (shown
in vertical orientation).

On the bottom of your router there should be a sticker with a barcode, below the barcode in brackets is your 64 bit encryption key. when your printer asks for the key use that.

If you press and hold the reset button behind the wireless router for 30 seconds it will remove all and any security you have set, all passwords etc will return to the ones set at factory, and there will be no protection at all, so the network will be open and a wep key is not needed as there isn't one.

If you can't reset the router then you need to get into its settings to find it out or ask the person who set up the router, if no one set it up, then does it even have a password? do you just click or double click to connect wirelessly? if you do, then you don' tneed to enter wep key into the hp either, the network is open and there are no protection in that case.

if you reset the router the serurity is removed.

So to find out the wep key, you need to press start -> run -> type cmd and press OK
(or hold down windows key and press r)

in cmd, type ipconfig and press enter

Note the Default gateway address, if it is similiar to 192.168.10.1 or something to that direction then write it down.

Open your internet browser, and typehttp://THEADDRESS
Replace THEADDRESS with the ip, for example if it was 192.168.10.1 you would writehttp://192.168.10.1 and press enter on the address line

The router page should open, it will ask for username and password, try admin admin or admin 1234 and similiar default passwords, if your unable to get in and you don't know the password, the only place we can find the wep key is on one of the computers.

try wirelesskeyview which may be albe to recover the wep key from one of your computers http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_ke...

Also you can look at the wireless settings on your computers see if the recorded details of the network are readable somewhere, if you see wep key and its all ******* look for a checkbox that says something to the direction of show password.

you may be able to recover the key from one of the computers.

If your unable to find the key from the computers and you can't sign into the router.

    You have two options
    1) reset the router and lose all the security and settings, all computers will need to be reconnected.
    2) get someone to come over and help you out.

Just purchased a wireless HP Office jet 8500. Staples said I could use it the same as the non-wireless 8500. I am using a USB to connect to my desktop computer (HP w2338h - windows Vista). I can get the...

download a file from the HP website called the Scan Diagnostic Utility. you can see it in, Hp.com -> Support & drivers -> select the first option: download drivers and software -> type in the product number of your printer. it usually starts with CC, CD, Q and its only 6 digits long. if you see a # sign. ignore it. just the six digits before the # sign will do. then click 'GO' it will ask for your operating system next. input your operating system then the downloads will open. click the plus sign of 'UTILITIES' and you can download the SDU from there.

Download to your desktop and install.
Then run the file.
Files with red x's will need fixing. The SDU already has the ability to fix it by highlighting the file with the red x and there will be a "FIX" button available after that.

good luck!

Hpj4680 will not print after adding wep pw

Cant you use WPA2, wep is very weak and should never be used if you have the option to use WPA.
If you have used WPA2 security ( you choose the password )
and the printer is asking for a wep key ( the router generates a long key , you dont choose it).
That will be the reason you can't connect, if the printer cant be changed to WPA, you only have the option to log on to the router and change security to WEP, which i would not recommend

Note, there are 3 or 4 different versions of the office jet pro 8500.

Not yours? Then input the proper one, according to your documentation or stickers or box.
