Why does the pull cord is hard to pull and lawn mower won't start.

im betting the safety handle is not down far enough and is allowing blade brake to drag , also it's holding out ign ckt from working as well , those cables stretch all the time

Masport 4 stroke mower...started it up and it worked for a couple minutes with a strange rattling growling noise.. Oil ok and petrol filled but the mower just shut it's self down and im not sure w

It will run for a few minutes and then shut down?
Lets ignore the growl for now. Loosen Gas cap and see if it will keep running. The rattle might be in the pull cord mechanism..possibly not related to stalling issue

As far as i remember the SV40 was a non self propelled mower, it will only have an opc cable ( engine brake cable ) this is part no. 531206026, in the UK the parts are distributed through Flymo.

We have a briggs and stratton sovereign petrol mower the pull cord has gone loose no give so unable to start mower

Hi,
If I'm understanding you correctly, the pull chord is out and will not retract so you can pull again?
If this is so, I'm thinking that there may be some obstruction keeping your spring from returning the rope. The spring is wound like a clock spring. When you pull the rope, the spring wants to bring it back. Sometimes a twig or dirt or other type of abnormality might prevent the spring from retracting your pull rope.
You might need to loosen the engine cover to remove the obstruction.
Good luck!

Brand new Pope Spitfire 40 lawnmower won't start

Caren,
Drain the fuel completely if it is older than 1 week. Make sure you undo the bolt at the bottom of the fuel bowl to ensure all old fuel is drained. Refill with fresh fuel (premium unleaded) and try again. If it still does not work then remove the spark plug and rest it on the metal of the mower while still attached to the silicone ignition wire. Have someone hold the cut out bar to the handle (as you normally would to run the motor) and pull the cord. You should see sparks being emitted from the spark plug. (Make sure there is no fuel nearby) If you cannot see any sparks then replace the spark plug with a new one and repeat this process. If you still cannot see any sparks being emitted after attatching the new plug to the silicone wire, resting it on the metal of the mower, and pulling the cord to start it as you normally would, the mower will need to have the resistor and capacitor checked by a professional repairer as no spark is being generated.

Good luck.

Allan
