You may have to reinstall it, or reinstall the usb controllers, or reset the printer. What make and model printer are you using, on what OS?

It sounds like a usb connection issue, but to say for sure we'd need to know the make and model # and the exact error message you're getting.

If this is a new installation of the printer, please download the updated HP software/drivers from here and install using it instead of the cd.
If the printer is correctly installed on the system, can be found in the control panel and device manager, and the updated HP software is already installed, it is most likely a usb controller issue, or a conflict with your printer drivers. In any event, please use this HP support article to troubleshoot the problem. If the printer was previously working, you may simply need to reboot the computer to reload the usb controllers and detect the printer anew. If that doesn't work, follow the instructions given there. Also see this page.
If you encounter other errors or have future questions about your model, see its HP home support page here.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Hello, this is a very common problem and the solution could range from very easy to something more difficult. To answer your question, it would take some troubleshooting. Is your printer connected by a USB cable? Most newer printers are, so I will assume this. I would try plugging your computer into another computer and verify that the other computer detects it. If it does, you will see the "detected new hardware" window pop up. Backtracking a bit, most USB type HP printers ask that you first install the software from the HP printer CD first, before connecting your printer. If you don't do this installation properly other issues come up that prevent your printer from installing properly and that's another question.
So to answer your question, first you need to verify that your printer is ok by trying to install it on another computer, or at least be sure that it detects. If it does, then you know your printer is ok. Secondly, make sure the USB port is working correctly by plugging something else into it like a USB thumb drive or a USB mouse, etc. If all of these things are working, make sure the printer is on and connected properly and check the device manager under the control panel and see if there is any printer showing up there. If so, disable or uninstall the printer and try to connect again after following the HP manufacturer's instructions, such as using the install CD first. If you don't have the CD, you can find the software on the HP support website. Google, "HP driver downloads". Your problem is not something that has a simple answer because there are so many reasons why a printer won't detect, but the solution requires a methodical step-by-step troubleshooting like I mentioned above. One of the major problems is that the printer sometimes is not compatible with your computer. You need to verify that the printer is compatible with your operating system and computer. Have you done that? For example some of my HP printers will not work on my new Vista computer because my computer is too new for my older printers. All of these things have to be investigated online by going to the support page at HP.com and verifying compatibility. I hope this gets you on a good start.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR PRINTER SET ON DEFAULT AND THAT IT IS INSTALLED PROPERLY! OR YOU CAN ALSO TRY...UNHOOKING YOUR PRINTER, SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER AND HOOK YOUR PRINTER BACK UP BEFORE RESTARTING TO LET YOUR COMPUTER INSTALL YOUR PRINTER.

IF YOUR COMPUTER DOESN'T RECOGINIZE NEW HARDWARE, SUCH AS YOUR PRINTER, THAN IT IS NOT SET AS YOUR DEFAULT PRINTER!

YOUR SOFTWARE MAY NEED TO BE CORRECTLY INSTALLED, MAKE SURE YOUR PRINTER IS NOT HOOKED UP WHEN INSTALLING SOFTWARE.

SOFTWARE HAS BE INSTALLED FIRST, AND RECOGNIZED...THEN RESTART COMPUTER WITH PRINTER (HARDWARE) HOOKED UP!

Bought a used HP1022n printer. Need to hook up to my computer as a local printer. When trying to instal the driver, the set-up says waiting to connect to the computer. I have the USB cable connected,...

Make sure you don't have the printer connected until after you install the driver. If you had the printer hooked up to the computer before you installed the driver, uninstall and start over. There should be a prompt during the installation process that tells you when to hook up the printer. If that doesn't work, you may have a driver for a different operating system than what you have on your computer. If you need further assistance, please email me the operating system you are using on your computer.

Is hooked up to computer but says it not hooked op to computer will no print off computer

this could be a communication problem.

you need to make sure that the cable that you are hooking up is the one that came with the printer, also you may need to plug the cable into a different port and check if the computer detects it.

{take intensive care in case you follow these steps. }
there is an entry for USB printing support
and USB composite device in the device manager under USB devices, if you remove these entries. the computer will start detecting the plug and play device and hence will detect the printer.

Correct communication problems between the printer and the computer.
  • Remove the USB cable from your printer and your computer. Reconnect the USB cable to your printer and your computer.
  • Turn off the printer. Unplug the printer power cable from the electrical outlet. Reconnect the printer power cable to the electrical outlet, and turn on the printer.
