Wait for a fix from Sony, this is OS related, if you have downloaded a update and your console starts acting up and never has before Confuses says 80% Sony hit your PS3 with some wacked out mojo with that update, either way if your Blue Ray disk has been damaged it needs to be repaired to play PS3 games, Sony holds the patent to Blue Ray technology so no matter which direction you sail this ship Sony stands to proffit from your Blue Ray failure, so the choice is send your 60Gig powerhouse PS3 to Sony and get some thing back that looks like your PS3 60Gig but all that sweet hardware you liked, you know FULL Backwards Compatibility and the Emotion Chipset, I will take mine to a local repair shop that will replace the drive for $120 before I would send it to Sony, that way I get back what I took in there all $500+ of it thank you very much!
I've had the same problem where it will take the discs but wont read any of em. I tried cleaning it, but turns out its not the lens, its the motor thats not working. I havent been able to find out where to get a new one yet, but ebay seems like the best bet, just buy a junk one and hope its not the drive thats junk... lolz
I believe if we are all having the same problem we ought to let someone know who can do something abouy it!!!!! Sony should be responsible for the repair and have a recall. I have also torn mine down using you tube and cleaned the lens with no luck.

Blu-rays utilise a blue laser within the drive and DVDs use a red laser. Sounds like the blu-ray/games reading blue laser has died and it'll need replacing. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270866380794 Very helpful and knows his stuff.
The problem is that the lens/laser is weak and need to be replaced. Since it was reading disc and now it cannot read any disc anymore, that confirms the problem. To replace the laser/lens of the playstation 3. Please follow the steps below:
Safely turn off the playstatiion 3,
Disconnect it from the power outlet,
Leave the unit to dissipate its high current in about 6 hours before starting to work on it,
Open the top cover of the PS3.
Pull out the power plug for the Blu-ray drive.
Carefully pull up the Blu-ray drive and unclip the data cable ribbon from PS3 drive.
Remove the two silver screws on top right and bottom right,
Unscrew the 3 black screws to the left as well,
Remove the top metal shielding of the Blu-ray drive, exposing the guts.
Remove the top frame now that we are inside to reveal the laser (unscrew the screws)
Once that is done you should be staring at the Blu-ray laser.
Remove the Blu-ray lens screws,
There are more screws to remove,
There you go after removing all those screws the laser should easily come out, simply repeat the process for another working Blu-ray drive and extract its Blu-ray lens or just simply buy a replacement part (part #kem-400aaa) and insert it in the Blu-ray drive and start screwing it back on.
Hope this helped You. Thank You for using FixYa!!!
You might not actually need to spend any money on a PS3 repair guide at all- instead you will need to purchase a new Blu Ray drive (or laser lens itself and simply replace the lens) But even before you do that try the following things:
Clean your game disks
Clean your Blu Ray drive (get one of those laser lens cleaning kits on eBay or Amazon)
If that doesn't work then I've got a free step-by-step PS3 repair guide that will show you with video and text instructions how to replace the Blu-Ray drive yourself. Its all online so you don't need to download anything either
replace the drive or optical unit you will be glad you did. Another tip never play blue ray movies unless you want to keep replacing the drive as it puts wear on the laser and servo motor get a blue ray for you movies leave this to the gamming only my advice! please give me a good review you will be glad you did!
the blue ray laser has two high energy beams at 450nm(bluelight) and
730nm (redlight). the highpower diode on your machine im afraid has
failed (due to the extreme heat conditions in ur PS3). you need to install a new laser ..only 100 i charge or 160 from
sony (150+TAX 2 week wait)
Now if you have the newer model laser KES410ACA, then you have 2 SEPARATE light sources...these tend not to fail as often
Normally ps1-ps2-ps3 has Red laser beam lens system. So it cannot read Blue ray disks. its not possible until you change it lens system. there are some commericially available Blue laser lens system. Buy one and fix it with authorised service personnel. all the best
