5 Answers

I can't burn a 4.7GB DVD-R in my Que! DVD burner. It keeps saying "Burning failed because the disc cannot be written to. (Error code 0x80020042)" It can burn to this type of sic, can't it? Why the error?

I guess I should have mentioned that I am on a Mac. The software that came with the drive is not mac compliant. However, when I put in a blank disk, it appears on my desktop, the finder recognizes it as a disc to be burned, and all appears normal, until I click burn, and then I get the error.

I have used DVD-RAM on this drive without problems, plug and play without software.

However, when I put in a blank disk, it appears on my desktop, the finder recognizes it as a disc to be burned, and all appears normal, until I click burn, and then I get the error. From iPhoto, the DVD is recognized, burn options are available until the burn process begins and fails.

Thanks for the info. I am using a DVD-R disc, not in a cartridge, single sided. It says on it 16x/1x, but I can't find any info on the drive about burn speeds. I have used the drive many times with DVD-RAM discs, in cartridges. This is the first time I've tried to use it for burning non-cartridge discs.

The QPS website, unfortunately doesn't even mention this type of product anymore.

Thanks, I have Toast somewhere, I'll try that.

  • amebird Sep 14, 2009

Thanks, I am afraid of that.

  • amebird Sep 15, 2009

Actually it was solution #3 that helped. I installed Roxio Toast where I could select a slower burn speed. Thanks!

As long as it is a -R and not a +R you should be fine.

Have you tried reducing the burn speed to a low setting (perhaps 2x) and see if the problem persists?

This device was manufactured in 2001, for Windows 98 and Windows 2000. It is quite probable, that it is not compatible with your OS. The device is no longer being manufactured.

Make sure that the dvd you are using is a "-R" and not a "+R" . Also make sure that It is not a DVD-RW disc. What is the burn speed of your drive? Make sure the disc your using is compatible with the drive. Some discs are only compatible with certain burn speeds and your drive may be too fast or slow for that disc. Also make sure the disc is a single layer and not a dual layer your burner may not be compatible with dual layer dvds. Have you used this drive before or is it the first time? You could also go to the QPS website and try to download the newest FIRMWARE available for the drive. Sometimes updating the firmware will fix a burner with problems. Also sometimes different brands will not work with certain burners sometimes. You could try buying a couple different brands and see if they will work with your burner.

From what I had read about the drive the recording speed is 2X & the drive is compatible with DVD-R and DVD-RAM. You may need to use some burning software for Mac that allows you to adjust the burn speed to the slowest. I do not use a Mac PC and I am not too familiar with them. Sometimes certain brands of discs just have trouble on different burners. I have had some packages I had to throw away because they did not work in my burner even though their specs matched my burner. You may want to see if there is any burning software downloads online for the Mac that you can download and try as trial to see if you can get a disc burned. You could try www.cnet.com and goto their downloads section. Sometimes burning software will have different settings you can adjust that may help you get a properly burned disc. I would still try a couple of different brands of discs and see if the results are different.

Dear User,
There are three different possibility of your problem.
1. The installed RAM is not working properly it gives error when it is fully loaded.
2. The burning software you are using might be corrupted with some reasons.
3. A DVD cannot get full of 4.7 GB data to write at 4.7GB DVD Disk.
Please keep your data 150 Mb to 200 MB below than the total capacity of DVD Disk Size.

I hope your problem will be resolved.

An eror occured whwn burning disc Error code

Not sure if this will help but make sure you do not have two dvd-authoring programs on your computer, this might be causing the error you are seeing. There could be an issue with the media you are burning to, sometimes you have to experiment and find discs that work well with your burner. Burn speed may also be an issue, some discs say that you can burn at 4x speed, when in fact that disc may only be able to accomodate 2x - so try reducing the authoring speed to half the maximum the disc says.
I looked on the GoCyberlink website and was not able to see that error code listed in their support pages. Another possibility though not as likely, you could have a damaged operating system or there is a problem with your dvd burner. Wish I could help more.

try using a burning program wothy of the attempt.real player works off a basic set of drivers and fails on many occasions. if your burning from dvd to dvd use dvdfab version 5.0 or higher. this will right past any copyrights. or if burning from files use nero version 7.0 or higher. anything less is a waist of time.

Burning dvds with realplayer

DVD discs come in two capacity sizes.
Single layer DVD have a capacity of 4.7 Gb
Dual layer DVD have a capacity of 8.5 Gb
Some DVD burners are single layer burners only and cannot burn dual layer discs.
The error message you are getting would indicate that the disc you are using is not large enough to copy all your program material.

Problem copying a movie onto a lightscribe hp dvd +r media disc, using my hp dvd940e dvd writer

The semaphore timeout period has expired refers to the fact that the driver is no longer communicating with the device and failed. Each time a CD Burner is setup for a CD Burning session the burner hardware will perform a 15 step power test to determine the OPC for a Blank Media Disc, OPC meaning Optimum Power Calibration. This test also takes place during the CD Burning process so the CD Burner can determine the best burn speed and method for the disc; this test is called 'Running Optimum Power Calibration'. Although the test is performed by the hardware of the CD Burner, the device initializes the CD Burning Software for the test to take place. This is one reason why your software may report the "Power Calibration Error" or ?Calibration Error Full?. With Power Calibration errors they can be caused by different factors and sometimes difficult to locate, especially if the errors are at random. Below are the known factors that will cause the Power Calibration Errors and how to check each factor, it is important that each point is considered if wanting to get to the bottom of the error. Power Calibration Errors can occur when OPC or ROPC tests for the media disc so the condition of the disc, brand of disc and even the firmware for the CD Burner can be the cause for the errors occurring. A device such as a CD Burners can have different problems if there is a power consumption issue with the system and the Power Calibration Error is just one of those problems. If using either an internal or external CD Burner make sure to disconnect all other devices, except the hard drive and Burner, before attempting to burn a disc. Double check all cables for any faults and if possible test with a 2nd Data Cable. It is also advisable to disconnect the power connection for the CD Burner and test with a spare connector. If you have no trouble with other discs, use them and put to one side the lightscribe, other than that try the burner in another pc or with other burning software, as you can see it's quite ridiculous what problems burners can create.

Some disc brands just don't work with certain burners, and that can result in the said error. Did the store give you a different brand when they replaced your old batch? this error can also be a result from burning too much to the disc, or from trying to copy protected content. If you're burning movies, I would suggest that you close all other programs while burning, and burn at the lowest speed. Regardless to the error, you'll get a better quality result. Good luck
