How to Fix a Slow Computer

I restart the computer and press F8 so it goes into Safe Mode. That way it only runs Windows XP without background programs. I go to Program Files>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleaner or LeftClick on My Computer then RightClick on C: drive and choose Properties to run DiskCleaner with Compress Drive unchecked. The HardDrive needs about 10 to 15% space to do a Defrag. (Freespace / Capacity = %). After the HardDrive's been cleaned I click on the Properties Tool tab for Disk Defragmenter, or Program Files>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter. Let it defrag while no other programs are running. After it finishes, RightClick on C: drive and choose Properties, click on Tools tab, click on Error Checking "Check Now" and place checks in both checkboxes. Restart computer, and let error checking do its job.
If it still runs slow I suggest getting the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed and do a Full System Scan, then run it again after Restart. Then download and install IOBit's Advanced System Care Free Edition. CCleaner Slim finds a few more items after that.
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal should be updated every month, along with Windows Update items.
Buy an external USB HardDrive and move your photos, music and anything else you want to keep onto it. The less files there are on the HardDrive the easier it is on your computer.
I've seen a few laptops here for my friends stationed here in Afghanistan where they were so infected the browser window was blocked. I've used this remedy and other methods to get them back online.

Can't get on net

Step 1:
check your firewall and antivirus settings
Step 2:
Internet Explorer problems and errors can ruin your browsing experience. Slow download speed, constant crashing, security concerns, and multiple pop-ups are some of the issues many IE user complain of. Many have switched to Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome for these reasons. If you are happy with Internet Explorer and want to fix the problems with the browser, there are a few ways to diagnose and troubleshoot them at the same time.

Determine if you are having a problem with the overall IE software, or with little things, such as video or sound playback. If you are having problems with small applications, the issue is probably something having to do with the Add-ons that Internet Explorer has. Click "Start," then "All Programs," navigate to "Accessories," select "System Tools," and then click on "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)." This will allow you to verify if you have a problem with add-ons. If you do, you can still use Internet Explorer without them. Reset your IE settings. If you are having problems with the overall execution of the software, it could be that your settings aren't correct. Go into "Internet Options" and then "Settings." Scroll through the settings until you see "reset settings" and click on it to reset the settings. This will give you a clean slate to work with and should eliminate many of the larger problems. Run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (See Below). Tips for solving problems when Internet Explorer crashes or stops working If you have malware or spyware, it is probably causing problems with your setup. Clicking on the removal tool will allow your computer to diagnose and remove the virus. Update Internet If you run the newest version of Internet Explorer, you'll find that some of the issues you are experiencing have been fixed.

My asus eee900 has a virus and ikt says my firewall is on and that i need an activation code to enter in when i click the recomendations button how do i get rid of this virus and protect my pc??

You have (accidentally) installed "scareware" -- it is asking for your credit-card, in order to purchase a "code" which may, or may not, "activate" the software.

On a different computer, download from Microsoft:

the "MRT" (Malicious Software Removal Tool).
Copy the file to a USB memory-stick.
Carry the memory-stick to your computer.
Run the MRT.
It should "clean" your computer of the malicious software.

Slow connection to internet , what anti virus is best/easy to dow

Notebook may be slow as it may already be infected with a virus which also could be preventing the installation of an antivirus. Suggest you download Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool if possible on to your notebook. If possible, download directly to your hard drive and then run it from there. If too difficult or not possible, download using another computer onto a thumbdrive which you can then plug into your laptop to run it. The Tool is Windows version specific and is tailored to remove specific prevalent malicious software from Windows AFTER it has been infected. Microsoft releases a new version on 2nd Tuesday of every month and the latest was posted March 8th. Clicking on the following link will take you to Microsofts Knowledge Base Article #890830 for details and to do the subsequent download for the version of Windows that is on your notebook.

After running the Malicious Software Removal Tool you may choose to install an AntiVirus. You can retry downloading and installing from the internet or alternatively just buy a packaged product from a local store which would be on a CD.

A final but effective alternative is to back up any personal data you have on the notebook onto removable media and then use Acer's eRecovery to restore the notebook to its factory installed image. The recovery files are contained in a hidden partition of the hard disk drive on the Acer notebook. Acer eRecovery is accessed by pressing the Alt and F10 keys together repeatedly as the notebook starts up. Once recovery is done, the wireless will require re-entry of the WEP or WPA key if you have the wireless security enabled on the router for your broadband connection. However, if your wireless is open, then a key is not required. Note that if indeed you have unsecured wireless, this may be a contributing factor for the slow to connect to internet that you were experiencing as others can freely connect through your open wireless and proceed to do heavy downloads at your expense.

I have the lasa.blaster.kelger worm on my sons

It's odd that your anti-virus software can "detect" but *NOT* "remove" the malicious software.

Try the free(!) "Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool":

to see if that tool will identify/remove it.

and click to run a "virus-scan", to see if that scanner will remove it.

Note that "best practices" states that you should backup all the data, "wipe" the hard-drive, reinstall Windows, and reload the data,
because you can never be SURE that you have eliminated the virus and have UNDONE all the "damage" that the virus has done.

I belive I have a virus, the only way i can start my laptop is thru safe mode. how can i remove the virus?

Good thing you are still able to run your laptop thru safe mode. This means that you can still do something. The best thing would be to go I am highly recommeding this antivirus even if its just online because it was able to detect and clean 450+ viruses on one of my servers/pc. If you don't want to hook it up to the internet, download the eset installer using a different PC and just copy the file thru USB.

Hope this helps.
