yes you can definitely upgrade, but then you have to jailbreak the phone again after u upgrade it.and if you are upgrading you iphone 3g to ios 4 that there are solid chances that your phone will become a lot slower.just see,to which firmware u want to upgrade and then search on google for the jail break of that perticular firmware and make sure ,there is no problem in jailbreaking the new firmware.just to make sure there is no problem.coz some firmwares are very difficult to jailbreak. :)
You must have the phone jail broken and unlocked to use a different carrier than the manufacturer intended. If you have an updated baseband on this phone (that ultrasn0w wont unlock) then it can't be unlocked without updating to IPAD baseband and custom firmware. Phone must be jail broken.
You can have it jail broken to Cydia of installous. But once Apple sends out another OS update and you update your phone, your phone will reset and you'd lose your jailbreak. you can jail break it again. but it would be harder to find a jail break made for the newer OS that apple had sent out.
Well well well...read the tutorial!First what is your version and what is ur friends version? If its 2.2.1 then it can't be unlocked (for now). Go to iTunes and RESTORE the phone. Then get Pwn 2.5-2 and find .ipw file version of ur friends device . They must match. Then do jailbrerak again.
Just to give you a run down. When they said it was jail breaked or jail broken this means they ( the place you got it from ) have voided the warranty of the phone and broken the terms and conditions of the contract with apple and have unlocked it to any cellular network ie before you tried to upgrade it on itunes it would of worked with any network ie T Mobile etc
Because it was jail broken by the person at the store you got it from and you tried to update it over itunes , itunes and the firmware update detected this and has consequently locked the iphone so you cant do anything with it unless you apply the latest jail break to it or you go back to the shop and get a refund and buy from somewhere reputable ie an apple store or a cell phone place that is big.
I would suggest getting a refund and getting a normal one as jail breaked phones will always have the issue where everytime itunes releases an update it will re lock it if you try to update it through itunes which is a pain and the amount of stuff you have to do to re apply or get it re unlocked is a nightmare.
Easier to get one that is not unlocked and that way you can upgrade it with piece of mind and know it will update with out any issues.
