FS-55 Cranking problem

My FS-55 had a cranking problem also on the first use. I am not a geek I am an engineer and have worked on cars, mowers, and diesel engines all my life, 52 years.

I have found that the engine floods very easy. When chocking do not pull the cord more than twice. Then switch to ''run'' and I'll bet it starts on the first pull. If you think it still might be flooded from the last attempt to start then DON,T Choke at all.

Safe bet might be to pull it once or twice in the run position before starting in ''Choke''.

PLEASE READ

I have now had two other problems.

1. I made the mistake of pulling the lower Trottle trigger before I pushed down on the top safety trigger. What this does is pop the Throttle trigger out of its holding bracket and it falls out of the handle by about two inches. Ace repaired it at no cost (under warrantee you know)

2. Now today, Sept. 12, 2009, I went to use the trimmer for the second time. It cranked and I realized the hub was turning slowly at first. Then after about a minute not at all. So now three weeks after I bought it I'm back to Ace once more.

PS. I also own the Leaf Blower with this same engine. Not a moments problem.

It is because the engine is hot so the fuel pulled into the engine is more volitile, you do need a reasonable cranking speed to start the engine. if the deco valve in the engine is not working properly it will increase the compression and make cranking the engine much more difficult.

Can you tell me what battery is needed for an 18HP It1000 Craftsman riding mower? We suspect someone installed a battery with insufficient cranking power for 18HP engine.

I can tell you this. I have a 17 HP Craftsman and the battery specs are:
28 amp hour
230 Cold Cranking Amps, minimum
My case size is U1R, but yours may differ.
A good auto supply store can probably look up your specs.
If your current battery is less than this, you may be correct about someone installing an undersized battery.
How does your engine crank if you use a car to jump it?
Let me know.

Battery reads full on the charger but mower acts like battery is dead and won't start

It may show a full charge but when you go to turn the engine over it's draining the charge and there's not enough of cranking amps to keep it turning over. I would suggest installing at least a 350 cranking amps. This will not hurt the engine but it will give more power to turn the engine over to start. A lot of cheaper batteries are only 200-275 amps but don't last long.

Was mowing with riding mower was running fine started missing and black smoke coming out of exhaust stopped mower immediatetly oil in carb now and when try cranking it just cranks and cranks not firing

Pull plug and check compression. When cranking see if bottom pulley turns from engine. If compression is below 90 psi it won't start and you have an internal problem. Stopped mower immediately sounds like motor blew. Also check side of motor for cracked block, Good luck.
