SOURCE: wont play/read any xbox games
1 dirty lens
2 dirty disc
3 programme error
1 i think the xbox cleans its own lens but check the manual if not get a good lens cleaner.
2 clean the disc always clean your discs after and before you use them.
3 take off your hard drive and any memory cards and reset xbox to factory settings

SOURCE: 360 wont read discs "open tray"
Sounds like a dirty lens. Have had this same problem many times.
2 easy ways to clean it are:
1. Buy a cheap lens cleaner, it looks like a cd with brushes on it.
2. Open up the tray and pull the power when it is halfway open. Take a can of compressed air with an extension and blow all dust off the lens.

Or you can purchase the same model dvd drive for the xbox 360 with the same firmware version on ebay and swap the pc boards inside the dvd drives from the old one to the new one. Which is pretty easy unless you have other wires that are non detachable. Youll have to note the position the cables are in and the way the tabs to the cables fit in. If It has non detachable wires you could always snip them strip them and attach the likewise wires of each kind from each dvd drive to each other as long as they run to the same place. This is simpler than it sounds. Youll need liquid electrical tape, T6 to T10 star drivers to dissassemble the case and a small phillips screwdriver for the dvd drive disassembly and wire stripper tool or knife. Be sure to leave a little length if you have wires that wont detach when you cut them so you have room to work.

Yes this error is caused by the receptors on the back of the DVD drive heating up so even if you are too clean the disc that will not help.
You need to stop the heat build up, you can do this by sending it back in or repair it yourself

Tips for a great answer:
To solve this open tray problem
Inspect and clean your disc Take a close look at the
bottom side of your game, movie, or music disc (the side without a label or
image). Are there scratches? Excessive scratches or smudges can prevent your console
from reading the disc. Clean your disc.....
Hold the disc by the
edges without touching the top or bottom surfaces. Using a soft, clean,
slightly damp cloth, lightly wipe from the center of the disc outward.
· Note Use
ONLY water to clean the disc.
· Once the disc is clean, load the disc into your console and see if the disc plays.
