that sounds like the inverter is going out. Depending on the model, you can oftentimes find the inverter for cheap on ebay. Most of the time they are pretty easy to replace. It involves taking the screen off, popping it open and swapping it. you might do a google search for instructions on how to disassemble it if you don't know how.
