Water flow interruption in shower diverter

We have a tub/shower diverter. No brand name on it, since it's a rental property, I'm guessing it was the cheapeast on the market.
Standing in the shower, water is running - suddenly the water stops. Push down the plunger for the diverter - wait a few seconds - pull it up and it comes back on, but only for a couple of seconds.

Needless to say this is quite frustrating -escpecially if your standing there covered in soap and have a headfull of shampoo!

HELP!?

I installed a Moen L2353E tub/shower faucet and water won't come out of shower head

Couple of ideas: If you don't get water at all first check to see if the shut-off valves are open. If so, close them and remove and clean the cartridge. If water comes from the spout and not the shower head, make sure the diverter (the handle on the tub spout) moves up when you pull it. If that works, remove and clean the shower head since there might be debris blocking the water flow. Without

It sounds like the diverter is not fully opening to allow the water to run to the spout. If the diverter is in the wall, perhaps there is a seal in there that needs replacing. If it is in the spout, just replace the spout,

Why does the water not flow from shower valve when turned on?

Do you have water coming out of the tub spout and not the shower head? If so how does the water get directed to the shower head,is it by pulling up the diverter on the tub spout? If water is still coming out of the tub spout then the diverter is bad and the tub spout needs to be replaced.

Shower head wont turn all the way off

the seal on the diverter may have fallen off, or bad/dirty diverter.

when the water is turned off, does the diverter return to "normally open" state? (no divert, goes directly through tub spout)

Kohler rite temp with diverter. When the tub is turned on water leaks out the shower head. Changed the diverter didn't fix problem.

You could have a restriction in the tub spout or just too much pressure. Diverter only restricts flow to tub spout so any restrictions to the tub spout will cause water to go up to shower head.

I will have to assume this issue developed and was not present at first use after the initial installation.

There are generally only two reasons for your problem. The first is that the diverter mechanism is simply wearing out and/or broken. The second it that there is a foreign object preventing it from doing its job correctly. Either way the diverter must come out. I have provided a couple of links below that should help get it out.

Once out, put a wadded up towel over the end of the tub spout opening so as to prevent any water from coming out of it. Then, for just a moment, turn your shower on full and adjust your temperature from full cold to full hot. This process should dislodge any foreign matter and send it out the opening the diverter came out of and also will probably get you wet. I usually plug the tub so I can catch what, if anything, comes out. Having a second person holding a bowl over the diverter opening helps reduce the water splash.

Rinse off the diverter and reinstall it. Turn the shower on and see if there is any difference in how much water comes out the spout while in the shower mode. If nothing has changed then the next step is to replace the diverter.

The diverter assembly part number is A603819
