Question about GE JE1540 Microwave Oven

GE Profile Microwave Keypad

I have had my GE Profile Microwave for only 13 months and the keypad does not work at all. I called customer service and the tech came and said the part is $900! Are they kidding me! I just bought this. What a piece of ****! I knew I should have purchased the Thermadore equipment. I am going to complain to customer service. I refuse to pay this. Has anyone has had problems like this with fairly new microwave from GE?

Customer service is not typically staffed by technicians, so they probably don't understand what is really needed to fix it. NOTE: The FixYa system is not currently notifying me when folks reply to my posts, so please contact me directly with your full model number form the tag in / on the unit and symptoms for more FREE help & do-it-yourself advice. I have the exact same problem at exactly 12 moths and 22 days. Just out of warranty, wouldn't you know. Sears says it will be $150 just to show up. What a piece of junk.

Touchpad does not work any longer. Is there something to check, or is this a service call.

You have a failing membrane keypad.

On some models you can order just the membrane keypad. It's more work, but it's cheaper.

If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved.

On other models, you have to order the control panel frame which comes with a new keypad already on it. This costs more, but it's an easy DIY job.

A YouTube video showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes, is here.

Some connectors have a lock.

The problem is more than likely one or two bad door switches, but you will need to call for service if you decide to fix this, to buy new may be a better option since prices have come down and you get a one year warranty.

My microwave GE Profile Spacemaker 2.0 keypad does not work, I unplugged it and reconnected it and it works at times for a while then it stops again.

You have a failing membrane keypad.

To help you further, I would need your brand and the full model number from the tag on the unit.

You're going to have to replace the keypad module and possible the control module (do the keypad first). You can try contacting these folks:
And see if they have a keypad for your unit. Depending on the age of your microwave, you may be best off replacing the whole microwave.

No you can have the keypad replaced. It may be something as simple as a dis-lodged keypad ribbon connection where it mates to the control panel recepticle. If you look here: there are several model numbers it seems you did not provide all of the numbers but the keypad is the same. The key panel here is $75.00 Then you add a service call or shop charge your looking at well over a $100.00 repair. Your call on how to proceed. Good luck.

My keypad is also dead.

No, but as with all electronic items faulty ones typically show themselves up during the first few months of use.

You've probably just been one of the unlucky ones.

Microwave dead even though power works

It sounds like the magnetron overheated and opened the thermal fuse on the magnetron.

This can be caused when the internal cooling fan is not running or by a magnetron that is failing.

When I say internal cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually.

I'm instead talking about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you microwave.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

There should be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can also find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

The magnetron will have a 5 to 9 year warranty. Your manual will tell you that.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

If needed, GE may send you a replacement magnetron. GE Customer Service is here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.
