Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

The freezer won't get cold enough to freeze or keep items frozen. I have removed the back panel, and there is no frost on the coils. The drain is clear, and water will run down to the collector pan. The refrigerator section seems to be working correctly.

By the way, the fan does run when I plugged the unit back in.

Can you tell me how to test the timer and thermostat? It is something I can check with a multi-meter.

Also, when I took the back panel off, I noticed that there is a small hole (3/8 - 1/2 inch) bored up through the top left of the unit. I assume this was probably for a water line to an ice-maker, which I don't have. I can see light through the hole; is it O.K. to plug this up with some spray-in foam, or by simply jamming in a few plugs cut from some rigid foam insulation?

There could be a few possibilities for your problem.

Clean the outside condenser coils, and make sure it is coming on and running.

Another possibility is the defrost timer is failed... so the fridge is constantly in a thaw state. If this is the case - replace the timer.

Finally, the thermostat may be failed, and not telling the condenser to kick on.

Any of these could be an issue.

this fan needs to run when the compressor runs, check fan blade for being jammed by ice if you have this much ice on back wall as ice will stall motor,if no fan there will be no cool air to refrige compartment also the defrost drain tray will fill with water then freeze over which in turn floods the freezer floor and refrige compartments cause it cannot drain to the pan in the bottom

I have a GE GTS 221C fridge/freezer. The fridge is working fine. All of a sudden, the freezer is not freezing. Just cold, but not enough to keep food frozen. The fan on the freezer is working.

remove the rear cover inside the freezer if it has a lot of frost on it,then the evaporator coil is frozen up and you cant blow cold air over or thru a solid block of ice, defrost it,then check the defrost heating element, defrost thermostat and timer or defrost circuitry for no power or defective components, you can use a hand held hair dryer to defrost it quicker

FRIGIDAIRE frost free refrigerator seems to be leaking. Items in freezer are frozen...items in refrigerator are cold...any ideas? It has an ice maker which is working. Approx. 13 years old.

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.

Our freezer and fridge or not keeping cold enough

This can be caused by the drain hole below freezer coil being blocked by ice. You MUST remove all ice in drain under freezer coil. Use turkey baster to squirt hot water into hole and use hairdryer to defrost. Possible defrost thermostat is defective. Unit never goes into defrost, ice forms on coil and in floor or back of freezer. After defrosting may work OK for a week or two but gradually gets warmer because ice is blocking ports where cool air gets to refrig. May also have water in refrig box. Can also be caused by defective defrost timer.

Freeze will not freeze.

I had a similar problem. The frost in the back is an indication that your coils are frozen. This could be from food packages falling out of the freezer drawers in the back and blocking the air circulation vents or maybe the freezer door was not closed completely and letting moist/humid air in and freezing the coils.
For me it was the first problem listed.I had to completely empty the freezer and Frig. and take the back panel off in the freezer. There you will see the coils and lots of ice!
1. Remove all items from the frig. and freezer and unplug frig.
2. Pull all the freezer drawers out.
3. On my GE side by side I took the light cover off and removed the bulb. There you will see two panel screws. Remove the screws.
4. Now pull out the mouldings on each side and you should be able to remove the panel.
5. Take a hair drier and completely defrost all the ice from the coils.
Be sure to keep plenty of towels handy for all the water mess. Remember to keep an eye on the drain tray in the back of the frig. and use a sponge to collect the water that will build up.
Hope this helps!.....

Freezer not freezing enough and fridge not cold enough

Hello Scott, remove the food from the freezer side and remove the rear freezer panel. You will see a coil and it should be completely frosted over. If not then you have a sealed system issue. If it is froze solid in frost where you cannot even see the coil, then you have a defrost issue. You should have a little frost on all the coil, the defrost is what clears the frost so the evap fan motor can circulate the air thru out the unit. If frost is good, push the light door switch to start the fan. If it isn't running check for 120 volts. If it has voltage, but not running, replace the motor. Hope this helps.
