Kenmore washer model 82980120, stopped working

Kenmore washer model 82980120, went through complet washing cycle without draining. Now it does nothing and the washer is filled with water. When I say nothing, I mean when I place the selector lever in any position the washer doesn't make a sound.

When I turned the inside drum with my hand, and turned the selector switch back around to the on position everything started working again. My brother-in-law told me the motor is going bad. Does anyone no if this is true?

Check the sound of a CLICK when you close the lid door. If you do not here it then it's your LIMIT SWITCH that is broken. I had a similar problem and to get my water out quickly I removed the cover that wraps the washer and removed the limit switch and joined the two wires together so that the machine thinks the lid it closed. It is not a safe thing to do but it gives you time to go buy a new one in the mean time you can continue to do your washing. Just remember that when you open the lid door your washer will still SPIN on it's RINSE and DRAIN CYCLE. be very careful if you have KIDS. I hope this will solve your problem.

Unplug the machine. Check the drain line for any kinks or obstructions. Check the pump. You will have to remove as much water as possible from the tub. There will be a flood and you want to keep the mess down to a minimum if possible, so some baling will be necessary. Remove the hoses from the pump and see if there is anything clogging the pump like a piece of clothing, etc. Check the pump impeller. Make sure there are no broken or missing blades and that the impeller spins freely. If any blades are broken/missing or if you can't get the impeller to spin freely, the pump is defective. Sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.

The washer on my double stack won't drain or spin.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Without a complete model number, I'm guessing but usually, washers have a lid lock built in that prevents the washer from draining or spinning unless the lid is closed.

If the lid lock is defective, the washer probably won't go into spin mode.

Check yours for the lock, where it attaches and replace it. It's probably not too expensive.

I was washing clothes -- in the rinse cycle and the washer just stopped -- I think right before it was to drain the water. I redistributed clothes, turned the knob until it was in the rinse cycle again...

It sounds like your lid switch is bad . Raise the lid , and insert something into the lid switch hole on the top ( where the lid actuator goes into the hole ) , to see if the washer drains . Without your complete model number , can't give you a part number .

Kenmore top load hqavy duty 80 series model 82980120 - how does one get to the drive belt. Washer motor hums but no action any cycle.

Your complete model number including the first 3 numbers , is needed to help you get to the coupling . The coupling , is the piece ( pt # 285753 ) which connects the motor to the transmission . When this piece breaks , the motor will run , but no machine action , except for water drain . Even spin , will not work , yet , you will hear the motor running .

Washer fills/agitates and stops prior to draining

If pump works fine or still pumps out water, then it is a timer malfunction. Replace the timer and you should be fine. To locate a part number for your timer, refer to www3.sears.com with the model number off your washer.
