Do you have the model number? Usually found on cabinet when you lift the lid. If it is pumping the water out but doesn't go into spin mode, have you tried lifting and closing the lid (or pulling out the control knob and pushing it back in)? If the washer will spin after lifting and closing lid it is the same problem that I had. It points to the "Neutral Drain" assembly. Some Kenmore / Whirlpool washers use what is called a Neutral Drain. Meaning that after agitating, the washer will drain the water before going into spin mode. The Neutral Drain assembly has a number of plastic parts and a very weak spring. If the spring breaks, the washer won't begin to spin. Stopping and starting the motor (lifting and lowering the lid) puts enough torque (twisting motion) on the drain assembly to connect the gears so that the washer will spin. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined you can fix it yourself by removing the cabinet, agitator, pump, motor and transmission. The neutral drain gears are in the transmission. A messy job but comparing the cost of the re-build kit (about $15.00) to a replacement transmission (about $170) it was worth the time and dirty hands to us.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Since it goes through it's cycle and pumps the water out, we can assume that the motor and timer are working. This points to two places.

There is a motor coupler (see the Sears sub category for motors and pumps in the Sears list) that provides power to the transmission from the motor. It's a fail safe device to protect both in case one of them jams.

Second, inside the transmission are a number of cams called the Neutral drain assembly that allow the machine to drain for a time and then begin the spin cycle.

On our machine, one of the cams that is supposed to have a spring didn't and the machine wouldn't spin unless frorced.

Here is a Whirlpool document with all of the components of their commercial grade washer, the consumer model is basically the same. Check the section on the Gear Case and look at item #26.

If you are relatively mechanically inclined, it isn't to hard to pull the transmission and get to the gears and cams. It's messy but can be done saving quite a bit of cash. (It cost us $15 for the assembly vs. $170 for a transmission.

Following is an excellent description from GURU JSROCK516 of how to remove the cabinet and access the transmission.

Washer does not spin water out of clothes

Does the water all pump out? If it does and not spinning could be your belt slipping or two many clothes it it. If it doesn't spin out even a smaller load then it is more than likely the belt.

Kenmore washer 80 series 110 model not spinning.

unless your washer is over 20 years old, then it wont have a belt. the temperature of the water wont have anything to do with it spinning or not.
need to know if it agitates or drains and just wont spin.
if it agitates but no spin or drain, then you have a bad lid switch.
if it wont agitate or spin, but will drain, then you have a broken drive coupling.
