Question about Craftsman Garden

2 Answers

I have a Craftsman Blower/Vac model 358.794770 that won't start. I'm not getting any spark from the plug when I pull the rope. I've replaced the plug, ignition module and the wiring harness but it still won't spark. I also disconnected and bypassed the shutoff switch but it still won't start. What else would prevent this unit from starting?

Most likely low compression caused by stuck piston rings or a scored piston and cylinder. This unit was made by Poulan and they have had an epidemic of this problem. The solution is to tear the unit down and put in new piston rings. Before you install the new rings you need to get a sheet of glass and some 600 grit wet dry sand paper. Sand each ring down about .002 to .003 and reinstall. This should solve your problem as long as you have good fire and the piston and cylinder is not scored.

50 PSI compression on mine. Should be 100-110. I thought the 50 hrs rating was for compliance to emissions; a friend repairs garden tractors, blowers, weed whackers, ... informed me this is generally the life expectancy. That is just about what I got out of it, three seasons between leaf blowing and grass cutting clean up I got a little more than 50 hrs :( He recommended Echo.

Check for spark and air filter in good shape. Make sure bulb side gasket is OK! No leaks! Good luck!

Tecumseh pull start engine on Craftsman Lawn Vac will not pull. Feels like engine is locked up.

the engine is probably not locked ! remove the plug wire, tip up and see if the blade turns. if so, try the rope again. if it wont pull, take top off mower off to investigate the pull rope problem. good-day !

I can't get my Poulon leaf blower to start

So far everything looks good. You're getting fuel, and you're getting spark. Only problem, is you've gotten too much fuel in it, and need to get rid of some before you can proceed. Take that spark plug out, and pull the starting rope hard several times. This will force the largest amounts of fuel out. Now's the part where you'll have to trust me. Use a match or a lighter to "flash" the cylinder. Make sure you don't have excess fuel spilled over the blower, but hold that match or lighter right up to the spark plug hole, and it'll "puff" at you. Please don't look into the hole while you're doing this. Flash the cylinder, and then pull the rope again, and flash it again. Next, make sure the spark plug is dry then put it back in. Set your choke to full choke, and pull until it hits once. Then put the choke on half, and it should start within 3 pulls.

Ihave a sears 2 cycle blower, vac and is not getting spark, is there anyway to check the igniter module--bill

remove the spark plug, plug it back into the plug wire place a screwdriver on the spark plug and the cylinder and pull the starter rope - if there is spark, you will see it on the plug [or you will feel it!]. if you have spark, put the plug back in and try to wiggle it side to side, if it rocks freeley, the cylinder bolts have come loose [a very common problem with these units]. the fix is pretty involved and not fun
