Try to connect it to different USB port, try it with another PC. What OS are you running? Try to see your discs status in Computer Management - Disk Management.

1. May be your hard drive is old and that's why a few or more files are corrupted.Change it.
2. Check your ram if you are more than one slots try using only one.
3. Try reinstalling your operating system.this is the final resque(try this only when above all fails because all your data will be lost when u reinstall)

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

Hi, I lost user manual, need to restore files back to computer.

Provided that you can find your external drive using My Computer feature, double click on that drive icon and search the drive for the files you wish to put on the computer drive (C drive). If you right click the file or folder on the Maxtor external drive and then choose copy, you can go to the folder on the C drive that you want to paste them into, select it and then right click the folder icon and choose paste to put them into the folder. To make the process quicker, you might choose to paste all files and/or files from the Maxtor drive onto the computer desktop and then move them around later.

Autorun file

hi.. well firstly your external hd does not require an autorun.inf file to function. autorun.inf files are used to instruct the computer to perform a certin task on connecting or inserting a a disc. This is used by software vendors to automatically run a setup program (or any app) so it will be user friends. basically you insert the disc and it runs automatically. A virus will use this method on external media like hd's and usb drives or flash drives to automatically execute themselves to infect the host system. There should not be a file as such on your ext hd. Thankfully your antivirus is doing its job :)

My maxtor hard drive shows as connected but no icon to connect to see files...

As you have not provided details regarding the equipment and OS involved, this response assumes you are on Windows XP, and the issue is with an external drive. The concepts are the same, however, throughout the versions.

How are you certain that the drive is connected? Double-check this by opening a My Computer window to see if the drive is listed among the various drives of your machine. You should be able to see the drive from there if it is connected.

(1) If it is not listed, it is not connected. Disconnect the drive (likely a USB cable connection?), wait a few moments, and then plug it back in. If the drive does connect, you typically should hear a short "beep" or other notification sound. Then, a window should open asking what you want to do with the material, if there is an autorun feature as is typical with Maxtor external drives. Allow the autorun to complete, and when you are asked what action to take, choose to open a window to view files. This will put you into a My Computer or Windows Explorer window so that you can see the files.

(2) If it is listed, double-click on the drive listed, and the window will open displaying the drive contents, and go from there.

If this information assists you in resolving the problem, please take a moment to rate the solution at a "FixYa" level. If you do not feel that you can rate at a "FixYa", please post back with more information regarding what has occurred subsequently, and I will gladly help you until we have reached a definitive solution.Thank you for using and rating FixYa!

A SIMPLE AUTORUN CREATION

If your portable usb drive still detected by your pc you can just simply right click it and go to properties and there just go to Autoplay then select Open folders and files.
