Question about Acer Aspire 4720 Notebook
You will need to check with Acer support that the driver is fully compatible with XP SP3 or VISTA, which it is probably not given the date stamp against the latest driver available at the site. It is often the case that the drivers lag in time behind Microsoft updates and especially as XP is now an 'old' generation offering from Microsoft.
Other users have experienced similar issues and one approach is to revert to SP2 installations then carefully apply each update in sequence instead of using SP3 to find out which update breaks the driver use. Each time you will have to make sure that you set a restore point before applying each update as Microsoft updates do not always do this automatically. Then uninstall that update and all is well. This is not ideal as it may leave the laptop relatively open in terms of Microsoft based hacks but it does get the sound driver working again.
