If it is loose tube cable, than you can do it in two ways. First using SC SM pigtails, which should be spliced on each fiber (don't forget that you need to protect the splice itself and protect bare fibers puttung them in same cassete or tray or ....) or the other way using "break out system" which will give your bare fibers more protection but the SC connectors can be mounted directly on the fiber in this system. Cheaper and preferable way is the first one.
If it is tight buffered cable there is also two ways of termination. First, directly mount SC connector on a fiber (no need for break out system) or splice SC SM pigtails. Cheaper and preferable way is the first one.

The fiber optic connectors is the removable (active) device connected between the fiber optical cables, make the two optical fiber end face precision to dock, so that the output light energy of transmitter optical cable can be maximize coupling to the receiving fiber cable. It's different connector types for fibre cables(SC is different to LC) - it means that you have SC on one side and LC on the other. Google to see what they look like.

Actually the range of anything Cat5, 5e, 6 etc is only 300ft. This limitation can be overcome with some form of repeater (hub, switch). cat cables are much easier to install and the twisting of the wire pairs make them fairly resistant to outside noise. (Still don't put next to high voltage anything). Single mode fiber can reach several miles while multimode fiber is more like 1500ft (not 100% on that) fiber can use a wide range of connectors. Fiber is typically more expensive and difficult to terminate plus it is not very flexible and is best used for connection different floors together or different buildings. The best network is a mixture of the two technologies.

100BaeFX to 100BaseTx media converter. ST to SC cable.

SCA connector goes to the RX port in media converter.

STA connector goes to the TX jack on network adapter.

SC male B to TX port on media converter.

ST male B connector to the RX jack on network adapter.

Connect media converter to network with Cat5e cable which uses RJ-45 connectors.

Installing a single mode backbone using 8.3um core and butting to a 9um core of existing fiber. will there be major losses and will existing laser equipment handle the 8.3 um fiber.


I ezpect there will be less attenuation with the laser Iight going from the smaller fiber to the larger fiber as all the light bundle will impinge within the radius of the larger fiber - on the other hand going the other way some light from the larger fiber to the smaller will be lost. I actually once had to match 9 micron fiber to 62.5 micron and found a company who could stretch the larger fiber down to the 9 micron giving me a light "funnel" which worked fine for the 800 foot distance I had to cover. Because lasers are powerful and the excess gain is high I expect you have a great chance of it working if your distances are not "miles". If you can get a hold of a laser emitter and receiver cable tester that would let you know your losses quickly. Reliable fiber communication with good cable is all about getting enough light thru to carry a signal. Perfection is not necessarily required as in my example.

No it should clip in, however you have the wrong connector on the end, usually these cables come adapters with them to suit you source or TV.

Get your self another cable with adapters, try eBay...!

Wiring problem


If they only way to fit your cable is by using the terminal push on connector (which, frankly, i'm not 100% sure what that's describing) and you can easily get that from your hardware store then yes, as long as you can connect up your wires without difficult and without stray copper.

Red wire is live, but white may be live as well during one aspect of operation. Usually neutral is black or blue. If your cable has red white and blue color in it then your using a 3 phase cable. A single phase 3 core cable will have red/brown black/blue green/greenyellow.

Hi Jess,

Need more info. What is your application, is it a back bone, are there regular drop points etc. For long haul I would assume you are going to use Single Mode, G.655 fibre. depending on the active equipment You could get 80km between re-transmission points. from a practical point of view the cable drum lengths will also play a part. For a 72 core cable loose tube, Nylon Jacket cable a 8km drum is getting fairly large so I would assume that a splice joint would be need at least every 8km.
