First check your vents to make sure they are free and clear of any dust/debri. A can of compressed air will clean them very well. Then turn it on and listen to see if your fan spins up and blows air out of the vents. If the fan is not working then you will need to replace it before using the laptop or you'll continue with the overheating and could damage the cpu. If fan is working then you can either replace with a better aftermarket fan, or purchase a laptop cooling pad to place underneath while in use. Make sure you always use the laptop on a cool flat surface, never on cloth as that will not allow adequate airflow. Hope this helps.

My computer freezes randomly

Hi Petter,

Does the system freeze when you start the computer.
It could be a program that is causing the system to freeze.

1. You Could disable a few startup items like messanger by going to
Start->run->msconfig and click on startup items and disable all and check if the system's performance is better.

Please refer the following MS article if you need clarification
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

2. If this does not solve your issue, uninstall unused programs in your add/remove programs.

3. Perform a disk cleanup following the steps in the below article.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312

This should help you fix the issue, if you still have problems feel free to post.

Freezes after few minutes

It is also important to remove the suspicious applications and programs in the computer to avoid Windows freezing. In this type of infection not only your Windows registry gets corrupted and needs massive repair but also there is virus based penetration in the Windows set up. In this situation it is recommended to conduct a virus scan as well. However, if your Windows freezes up, the best solution is to repair the computer registry.use registry cleaner reg in out

The iMac G4 17" freezes cursor moves but nothing works.

Could be a lot of things. Try running Disk Utility from your install DVD:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417

After that, if issues persist, try booting in Safe Boot Mode:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
If the issue is resolved in Safe Boot, try removing third party startup items:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/startupitems.html

If the issue persists in Safe Boot mode, try a new user.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
If issue is resolved in a new user, then you know it's something just in your user.
Delete the contents of the following, where ~ represents your user's home folder:
~/Library/Launch Agents
~/Library/Launch Daemons
~/Library/Startup Items
~/Library/Caches

This will usually resolve the issue.

If it persists in the new user, then the issue is likely with the operating system itself. At this point you should Archive and Install:

Windows freezes after startup

Its better to backup your data - booting from Ultimate Boot CD and backup to an external hard drive.
Try to do regular format or low level format to know the status of the hard disk

Webcam freezes

Try using the camera on another application to see if it freezes there to. If it still freezes then it could be some software that is running in the background. If it doesn't freeze on another application then you know its a problem with MSN.

If it does still freeze then go into msconfig from your start menu by typing "msconfig" in the search box or the run option depending on what operating system your running.

You would click on the startup tab and then disable all to disable all the programs that startup when your boot up into windows.

Reboot the laptop and try the camera again, if it doesn't freeze then at least you know its a piece of software running in the background and you'll have to figure out which one is causing the problem.

If it still freezes then you know its either a problem with the camera or a problem with windows.

Startup repair won't run

"Unmountable boot volume" this problem is your hard disk partition which is failure to recognize & identify the operating system running on the hard disk. Reformat your hard disk and put another operating system to run again your computer.

Freezing or shutoff on boot, setup or minutes into operation

Try this:

Boot the system with your Windows XP installation disk. When the boot options window appears select R for recovery console. Once you have logged into the DOS session type: fixmbr and hit the enter or return key and select "y" for yes you want to do this. Type: fixboot and hit the return key again, hit "y" for yes.
