Question about Shimano Rd 5600 105 Rear Derailleur, 10 Speed, Ss

Shimano 105 10 speed rear derailleur doesn't shift up or down well and doesn't stay in gear. Fairly new ( 250 miles)

Try this:
Set your shifter to the highest gear while turning the crank. If you have to, manually set the derailleur to the highest gear.
Release the derailleur cable by loosening its screw.
Pull the cable taut and re-tighten the screw that clamps the derailleur cable.
You should be all set.
The cable stretches over time. This can be avoided by "pre-stretching" new cables. To do this, simply shift into first gear and pull the derailleur cable away from the frame (where you are able to do so) fairly hard, several times. Then you just release and re-tighten the cable like mentioned in the steps above.

This may be to do with the replacement having a shorter cage, so it can't go on the big sprocket and big chain ring at the same time.

Try to not use the big rear sproket and the the big front chaining at at the same time,

Put chain on the "road" gear, Usually #7. Set shifter the same. Cable should be tight, but not forcing it to the next gear. Loosen adjustment, tighten cable and try. It may take several; tries.

My shimano ultegra left shifter is super stiff/hard to push in; what is going on?


Try flushing out the shifter(s) with WD-40, use plenty. The next step will be replacing the shift cables and cable housings.
  • Take the bicycle in an area free of cars and obstacles, such as an open parking lot. Concentration is required when learning to use Ultegra shifters or any other type of bicycle shifter.
  • 2 Mount the bicycle and rest both hands on the proper Ultegra hand control. The left-hand control operates the front derailleur. The right-hand control operates the rear derailleur.
  • 3 Start pedaling, smoothly and evenly. While pedaling is crucial to propelling the bicycle forward, it is also necessary when shifting the derailleur. Pedaling forces the chain to rotate. The chain must rotate before it can transfer to another gear.
  • 4 Push the outside right Shimano Ultegra lever in toward the bicycle. The rear derailleur will shift the chain to a smaller rear gear.
  • 5 Push the inside right Shimano Ultegra lever in toward the bicycle. The rear derailleur will shift the chain to a larger rear gear.
Rear Ultegra Derailleur Control
  • 1 Push the outside left Shimano Ultegra lever in toward the bicycle. The front derailleur will shift the chain to larger front gear.
  • 2 Push the inside left Shimano Ultegra lever in toward the bicycle. The front derailleur will shift the chain to a smaller front gear.
  • 3 Use the front and rear Ultregra hand controls interchangeably. For small changes in gearing, using the rear control. For larger changes, choose the front control. A smaller gear causes the bicycle to travel a shorter distance per pedal stroke but also requires less energy to use. A larger gear requires greater effort but in turn causes the bicycle to travel farther per pedal stroke.

If you are going to use the front triple crankset, then you need to use the 6603 components. These are for Triple set-ups.

If you intend to keep your bike a triple, then everything in the drivetrain must be the triple designation, hence the XX03.

If you want to change the crankset to a compact, then you can use the 6600 (double) equipment, but you will need to change the left (front shifter) to a double as well. The compact crankset, will give you virtually the same range as the triple and be much lighter and shift better.

The cassette: You can use any 10 spd cassette from Shimano or SRAM as long as the rear cog is no larger than 27. if you want to use a larger cog like a 28, then you will have to use the 6700 group, assuming yoiu want to stay with shimano ultegra.

Final Note: Since you are chainging everything, you may want to consider the SRAM Apex group, this gives you more gear ratio than the Ultegra, is slightly less expensive and around the same weight. Great alternative to Triple bikes.

Parts you will need to convert:
Rear Derailleur
Front Derailleur (if changing to compact double or Apex)
Chain
Shifter set (if Apex)
Crankset (if Apex or compact shimano)
Bottom Bracket (if Apex)

The biggest thing is that Shifters and rear derailleur must be from the same company (shimano, SRAM, etc.) after that just make sure that yoiu use 10spd with 10spd, 9 with 9, and so on. Everything else can mix and match.

Neither screw is for mis-shifts. Those are limit screws for the largest and smallest cogs. Tweaking the cable tension will usually bring in the indexing...

If you learn to shift correctly this won't happen..

You should NEVER run cross-chained (big-big or small-small). The drive train performs best when the chainline is as close to straight as possible. Excess sideways stress on the chain will wear it out prematurely and increase its normal efficiency.

To demonstrate this for yourself, put the bike in the same combination of gears you're having a problem with. Get behind the bike and look staright along the top of the chain. As you can see the line of the chain is a mild zig-zag where it is parallel to the bike at each gear but needs to angle across the drivetrain in between. On some bikes the chain might even come in contact with the next larger chainring when used this way.


If you can shift to the big-big combination without snapping the rear derailleur off, you're lucky. The big-big combo uses up all available chain length and the rear derailleur will be pulled toward the front of the bike, sometimes so far that it is in danger of being snapped off.

THERE IS NO UPSIDE TO CROSS-CHAINING.

As you can see, the rear derailleur is not long enough to **** up all the slack this gear combination creates. There are other combinations that would yield the equivalent gear ratio without either stressing the drivetrain or dropping the chain.

The basics of shifting are these:
1) The big ring and right side of the cassette in back are for speed.
2) The small ring and the left side of the cassette are for high torque, lower speed

Alivio 8 speed rear derailleur cable broken


There is a bolt on the derailleur that holds the cable. Loosen it to remove the cable from the derailleur. If there is a cap on the cable, remove it by pinching it with a pair of pliers. i do not know what style shifters you are using, but most all of them have a plastic cap covering the port for the cable. Shift to the highest gear to prep the cable for release and remove the cap. Push the cable back into the shifter and it should come out of the port you opened. Now, slide the new cable in and pull it through its circuit of cable housings and back to the derailleur. Attach the cable and shift to the lowest gear (big cog). Now, pull the cable along the top tube or seat stay (wherever it is more accessible) away from that tube very firmly several times. This pre-stretches the cable and minimizes necessity of adjustment later. The harder you pull, the better. Once you have stretched the cable, shift to the highest gear again and release the cable on the derailleur. Adjust the barrel on the derailleur to the center of its range and turn in the one on your shifter all the way. Now, pull the cable taut and reatach it on the derailleur. You can cut the cable to length and put a cap on it now. Shift into your middle gear and use the barrel adjuster on the derailleur to align the jockey wheel over the appropriate cog of the cassette. You should be all set!

Rear derailleur will not stay in new gear. keeps defaulting back to smallest sprocket. I've lubed everything in sight. I've recently had the cable disconnected from the derailleur, lubed it, then crimped...


What kind of gear switcher do you have?
It sounds like the problem might be there...
That should be the part that keeps your chain in the proper gear..
Does the Switch stay in place or does it go back?
if it does....
Is the cable properly tightened to the raer derailleur?
If so is the cable crimped to loose so that there is to much **** in the cable?
