Question about Sony VAIO VGN-NR180EW Notebook

1 Answer

Hey guys im having problems with my sony dvd drive. I recently installed windows 7 due to my vista completely turning to ****. I understand that the OS is still new and there is a lot that needs to be done. I have everything working for this computer except for the dvd driver. The funny thing that i cant figure out is when i first finished installing windows 7 the disk drive worked thats how i got the first drivers on the computer. I think i may have done something during this time to compromise the driver. Im using a Sony vaio vgn-nr180e laptop 32 bit. The dvd drive is a sony dvd rw aw-g540a ata device. I get the yellow exclimation and an error: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19). Ive attempted to uninstall the drivers and reinstall ones using win7's troubleshoot compatibility for vista 32 bit sp2 and after the restart it states that the driver install was unsucessful. After getting the driver detailed i learned that its attempting to use the cdrom.sys. after going through sys32/drivers i found near cdrom.sys there is cdfs.sys hovering over it it states that the driver is the CD-rom system driver and the cdrom.sys is a SCSI cd rom driver (whatever SCSI means). If anyone thinks they can fix this please let me know. Oh i also forgot to include that i have tried installing the firmware 1.3 and that self installer states ''target sony [model#] was not found correctly''. Thanks a lot in advance email is phongvtboy@comcast.net or please post.

The windows 7 install went great SABRE it was fast and easy (also highly reccomending anyone to upgrade). There we no error messages, according to sony this laptop isnt part of their windows 7 upgrade. I have tried with and without. In this compatiability there is windows vista 32 bit, windows vista 32 sp1 and sp2, I've tried them all. Mitehanand Ive tried deleteing them but not after the install and restart lets see. Ill get back Thanks for your guys time n talk to u guys soon.

Sabre, the install went smoothly absolutly no problems. Only started having problems when it came to drivers. Windows 7 has that backward compatibilty for almost all previous versions. Ive tried all the windows vista 32 bit options (just vista-32, vista-32 sp1, and sp2. I also have tried it without it and when it restarts it says the drivers were unsucessful.

haha it didnt let me finish but i tried it before and it didnt work but i noticed this morning before any of the replies that it says my f drive is not usable until it is formatted. I thought it was just my flash drive. I dont know but after i deleted the up and low for the third time it worked!!!!! (weird thing now is the flash drive isnt working and the drivers work lets try another restart) Thanks guys!!!!

When you did the Windows 7 install, did at anytime the install fail or give any issues such as files failing to copy? Have you tried a set of Vista drivers without the compatability install? post back your findings please...

You may try with these troubleshooting steps.

These steps are applicable for either Windows XP or Vista OS. But you can perform the same in the Windows 7 OS.

Option 1: Try installing Sony Registry Update for CD/DVD Drives:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNNR180E&upd_id=2031&os_id=28

Option 2: Try deleting UpperFilters and LowerFilters Registry values as mentioned:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314060&SD=SONY

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C299114

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C501168

The exact solution is delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters Registry values and then restart the Computer.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello! It seems like due to incompatibility with the device the OS cannot manage well the IRQs. I have figured out how to get legacy cards rollin' on Windows 7 by manually selecting the video card model or a very similar one, and then using the WDM drivers. However, i don't recommend that because you won't be able to use it for most things like gaming, only for video display. And probably with some errors. Solution: Either use Vista or change the video card with one compatible with windows 7

This is a problem with the install disk of windows 7 you have i have had this problem in the end i had to download a different copy of the windows install disk off the internet.
This is due to a issue with drivers with that specific dvd drive and a early version of the windows install disk.

How To Make Vista Bootable DVD with WIM Downloaded Files If you have purchased Windows Vista online and taken the delivery of the latest operating system via web download from Windows Marketplace, you would ends up with a few downloads with .wim and .exe file extensions. Rather than paying additional shipping and handling charges, you can burn or create a bootable ISO DVD image from downloaded Vista files with the following trick, where the .iso image can subsequently write to a DVD. The DVD created will be the typical 32-bit Windows Vista DVD that available in retail channel, and can be used to clean install.

How to make a bootable Windows Vista ISO DVD media

1. Put all 3 downloaded files (namely install.wim, boot.wim and an executable X13-49120.exe) in the same folder (for this tutorial, let’s assume the files are put on C:\ else you need to modify the path accordingly).
2. Run the X13-49120.exe executable. Windows Vista Setup Preparation will create a new folder “Vista” inside the folder and will populate the folder with all necessary Vista setup files which takes up about 2.52 GB disk space.
3. Exit from the Install Windows screen.
4. Download CDimage 2.52
5. Extract CDimage from CDimage.zip to the C:\ root directory.
6. Open a command prompt shell, and run the following command:

cdimage.exe -lVISTA_EN_DVD -m -u2 -bC:\Vista\boot\etfsboot.com C:\Vista\ C:\Vistax86.iso

Bootable Windows Vista x86 DVD ISO image in UDF format will be created as vistax86.iso in C:\ or any folder you specified above.
7. Burn the newly create ISO with a CD/DVD burning software such as Nero or Alcohol 120%. Try to burn at low speed (i.e. 4X) and turn on verification to ensure that the DVD creation is fine.

Create a Windows Vista ISO image and DVD with Oscdimg

Another possible way to create a bootable Vista ISO and DVD is by using Oscdimg CD-ROM and DVD-ROM Premastering Utility, available via WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) via Business Desktop Deployment 2007 or Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK)

1. Complete step 1 - 3 as above.
2. In the command prompt window, run the following command:

oscdimg -bC:\Vista\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lVISTA_EN_DVD C:\Vista\ C:\VistaDVD.iso

A VistaDVD.iso UDF DVD image will be created and can be used to boot the computer from DVD to install Vista.
3. Burn the ISO image file by using last step above.
