You can use a punch and hammer to tap the jaws back in slightly and turn the chuck as you do this to each jaw. This will at least let you get your bit out. You need to hit it hard enough to move it but not too hard as to damage it. Finesse it. After removing the bit try working the chuck jaws in and out all the way. If you feel resistance you may want to get a new chuck.

Bosch 11241EVS won't hammer

Not all bits for hammer drills are the same as the slots in the sides of the shanks are different between makes . There is a standard between hilti and ramset drill bits but other makers have different ideas Check out the shanks of your drill bits and look for the slot that holds in the bit.

It sounds to me like the clutch is set to a low setting. Its the dial just behind the chuck with the numbers on it, you can turn it to adjust how easily the drill slips, the purpose of it is to make it easy not to strip screws or drive them in too far. Just turn it to a higher number or all the way and it should work fine. The setting its on is whichever number is on top of the drill (opposite the handle), there should be a little arrow on the body of the drill pointing to it. The highest setting will not be a number but an image of a drill bit, in this setting it will not slip at all. Some of these drills are also hammer drills (as the drill turns, the chuck will also "hammer" in the direction your drilling, this is for drilling into concrete and things like that and requires a special bit (if your drill has that there will be an image of a little hammer on the dial next to the image of the drill bit). I hope that helps, Good luck.

The chuck on my new makita drill is stuck with a drill bit in it. It won't open back up.

This is caused by tightening the chuck using the drills power, if you clamp the bit in a vice and using a pair of multi grips on the chuck in an anti clockwise direction gently bounce the grips and after a few tries it will undo, don't use too much pressure or try to unwind it in one move or myou will damage the chuck sleeve

Dremel 3100 won't release the drill bit. Button at the top is pressed in and won't come out.

The button is only to keep the shaft from turning while you loosen the collet (the nut) with the little wrench. THEN the tool comes out.

Jaws won't tighten or loosen to hold a bit

Hmmm some times the counterclockwise screw that attaches the chuck to the drill come forward and that is how then it stucks the 3 parts that fix a drill to a chuck. Check if this screw come forward. If yes then destroy it and replace it... We destroy it by using a drill smaller than it (usually it is 5mm so we use 4mm bit and of course a CARBIDE one because even cobalt ones can not drill a hardened bolt)

I have just purchased a Makita 8391DWPETK 18V Cordless Combi Drill - how do i actually put a drill bit in? Do I need to take off the plastic ring?

The large black part of the chuck should turn left and right to extend (close) and retract (open) the three chuck teeth that hold the bit in place. Turn the chuck to open it far enough to get your bit fully in the chuck then turn it closed to hold the bit in. When the teeth make contact turn the chuck a bit further to get it tight enough that the bit won't slip. When you get used to it, sometimes it's easier to hold the chuck lightly and turn it by lightly squeezing the trigger to turn the chuck with the drill motor.

My bit in my drill is stuck into a large tree stump... that had been cut close to the ground. How can I get the bit unstuck? My dewalt drill is unable to drill in & drill out.

If it's a twist bit try putting a vice-grip pliers on the end and turn it so the fluting pushes the bit out. If it won't move or if it's a spade bit you'll have to split the wood around the bit. You may or may not be able to do this with the offending part of the stump in the ground. Using a wedge, drive it into the stump near but not next to the bit so you don't damage the bit. Don't drive the wedge flush into the stump or you may get the bit out and then have the wedge stuck. Worst case, carefully use a chainsaw to cut out the stump so you can split the wood around the bit.

I have drilled a 1 inch hole in my concrete basement wall. I cannot release the bit from the drill. The chuck won't turn by hand to release the bit.

Good Afternoon, Ladooudep55:

I hope you have got your bit back, but if not, remount the drill chuch onto the bit, and drill in forward without pushing the bit. If it still won't move, You can gently wobble the drill to enlarge the hole and retrieve the bit.

The other method is alternating light hammer taps with compressed air. It will make lots of grit dust.

If the hole around the bit is wet, you may have drilled into an iron pipe, if it smells it was the sewer drain. You will have to decide if you want to replace the pipe section or run an epoxy patch once you have retrieved the bit.

Was using with a spsde bi and hit a nail. Now

You may have inadvertently hit the hammer/drill switch and it is floating the middle between functions. This selector switch has a symbol showing a drill bit on one side and a symbol of the hammer on the other. Engage the switch bacK into the drill position

Hammer drills types

Two drive systems are available on both the hammer drill and the rotary hammer models: 1. SDS (or Slotted Drive System) bits for hammer drills/rotary hammers allow the bit to slide in the chuck and enhance the hammering action of the tool. For most applications, these bits provide plenty of torque. 2. SDS Max bits are similar to SDS bits, but have larger shanks and come in larger sizes than SDS bits. These powerful bits are useful in industrial applications.
