Somebody else has just had a similar problem so lets see if we can do some of the easy stuff first.

First check you dont have a red line through your speaker on your toolbar. If so click it and "UN-mute it.

Check that the speakers are plugged into the GREEN port on the back of the computer and that the speakers are powered up with the volume at about 1/2 way.

Open volume control.

If the volume contol on your computer is greyed out then you need to check the hardware from the control panel.

When the box with all the sliders opens up click on OPTIONS (top left)
Click PROERTIES

Make sure that Volume controls, Wave, SW Synth, CD PLayer, Line IN, and MIC all show on there and that the volume sliders are about half way up.

Make sure noe of the sliders have ticks at the bottom, if so UNTICK them.

If any of those are missing click options then properties from the top left and put a tick besides any that were missing
(nothing else unles you know you want that item)

Now close the slider box.

Put a normal music cd in your cd/dvd player on the computer and set it to play with windows media player.

You should now have sound out of the speakers.

If not double check that you have no problems with your hardware from the device manager.

If you have any exclamation marks by any hardware you need to sort that out. (maybe drivers first)

I would check to see if your sound drivers are properly installed. You can do that by following these steps:

  1. Right-Click on My Computer
  2. Click on Properties
  3. Select Hardware Tab
  4. Press Device Manager Button
  5. Press the + next to Sound, Video and game controllers
If you have and yellow Triangles, the drivers is not installed properly.
Check to make sure your sound hardware is listed as well. If it isn't one in the list, it might either be disabled in the bios or not working.

Laptop sound

To start, it may be a longshot, but try turning off bluetooth, in case that is interfering with the sound, or sending the sound elsewhere, like to a bluetooth speaker or cell phone. Also, try downloading the ESET NOD32 online virus scanner using Fireofox, to rule out any pesky viruses messing with your VAIO.
If problem persists....
Open the start menu, and check around for any VAIO support software that can check your system for errors and hopefully fix them.
If problem persists....
Open the sound icon next to the date and time on the lower right portion of the screen, and open the mixer, where you are able to see the volume for mic, speaker, and a bunch of other things. Check to see that no mute has been selected, or that no audio has been disabled.
If problem persists....
Look inside the control panel, and find sounds and audio. When you open it, click around and see it the wrong audio device got somehow selected, or if NO audio device is selected, and go ahead and select a different device from the drop down menu to see if picking another device fixed the issue.
If problem persists....
Next look inside your device manager, and see if the audio device shows up, and hopefully it does, then see if it has a yellow exclamation point next to it. Even if it does not, click on it, and find the option to add or update the driver for it. You may have to insert the restore DVD that (hopefully) came with your VAIO.
If problem persists....

The next options, in case nothing has worked, are to do a full reinstall of your Windows OS, drastic but we are at that point. Or else, I have seen instances where the actual sound card in the laptop has died, which would be one reason why Windows no longer recognizes any audio device as being there.
I hope one of these fixed the issue for ya!

Sounds like your headphones may need to be replaced. I'm assuming they don't work with anything else.

Try cleaning the plug with a lightly dampened paper towel and use a can of compressed air to clean out the jack on the laptop. If that doesn't work, try another set of headphones.

Laptop Speakers Dont Work

Start, control panel, sounds and audio devices. Check "volume" and check if to see if the speakers are "muted". If not, select "sound" the sound profile should be "windows default" if not change it by using the down arrow on the side. Try the "sounds" by clicking on one of them like "asterisk" then clicking on the "right" arrow beside the "browse". This should play the selected sound if the speakers are working.
