I'm new to ubuntu and I wanted to know if I could load kubuntu over ubuntu and keep all the features that come with ubuntu or will it wipe it out. I also have edubuntu loaded on it for my kids and don't want to lose any of that.

Ok, that's a loaded question really. If you "load" it from a CD like you did ubuntu, it will overwrite ubuntu and "be" Kubuntu. The same is true for edubuntu. With that said, the only difference between any of them is the desktop environment and programs that are installed. The nice thing about this system is that you CAN have all of them at the same time. Simply go into your package manager and search for packages named "ubuntu-desktop," "kubuntu-desktop," and "edubuntu-desktop." Install the appropriate ones or all of them if you like. Then choose the one you want to use at the login prompt each time. It won't even require a system restart, just logout and login to change environments, and all your settings, documents, programs, etc. will follow from one environment to another. Hope this helps.

Ubuntu is just a visual interface over Debian. The DE used on ubuntu is GNOME,
Uubuntu is just a visual interface over Debian. The DE used on Kubuntu is KDE.

so, You can Run only one at a time, but can keep both on system. Installing KDE via synaptic wont change the setup. You can frequently switch both.

Please see Ubuntu or Kubuntu forum for details or ask here, i ll provide link.

click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

How to retrieve files from a locked toshiba satellite l500 laptop

use a Live USB operating system.

You can create one very easy with this tool:

Choose your distro (I would go with Kubuntu), create your USB live memory stick, plug it in, boot your laptop to your new portable OS.
(make sure you select try Kubuntu and NOT install).

You will be able to browse to your files regardless of which partition they are in.

You may need additional information if you are not familiar with Ubuntu based operating systems.

I hope it helps.

Will this tower be useful as a home computer?

It will if you run Linux on it. I suggest one of the Ubuntu flavors. Investigate the various pros/cons of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu, etc., then download for free and install.

I want to know what are the famous operating systems of lunix and also i need a software or any method to boost my torrent downloading speed....................Please Help

There are a couple of linux distributions that you could use.. all of them are really good.. you could use Ubuntu or Kubuntu, Mandriva, Debian and so on. If you are a beginner then you wont go wrong with Ubuntu or Kubuntu. When it comes to torrent downloads all linux torrent software is good. like Ktorrent for kubuntu and mandriva. They work well. In terms of downloading speed it actually depends on how you do your torrents. If you want to torrent make sure that you don't Leech, as leeching causes you to get penalties.. thats why your download becomes slow. Make sure that you leave your download online for a good 6 hours or so.. so that you wont be tagged as a leecher. Also make sure that you choose the download well. look for the ones that have a lot of Seeders.

HP Pavillion ze5600 notebook won't boot up

Try booting, hit F8 for the list, go to safe mode but right after you hit enter to go into safe mode hold the left and right <ctrl> keys. That loads minimal amount of drivers as possible. Do you have you Win XP disk in case a repair is needed? Let me know what happens.

Creative ZEN running on UBUNTU

Creative Zen uses MTP which is a Microsoft jobby. Gnomad will allow you to transfer files between Ubuntu and your Zen, and you should be able to find Gnomad under the Add/Remove option in Applications.

I'll make a full walkthrough and add it to my blog later today.

No driver is neccessary. When you plug the camera into the USB port, Ubuntu should automatically mount the camera. If not, Open a command prompt and type the following command and post the output here:

dmesg | tail

You say you're running Ubuntu/Kubuntu. Which on are you using? Kubuntu uses the KDE desktop rather than GNOME, the default for Ubuntu. The user interface is different.

If the camera is mounted as it should be, it would be mounted under /media (Usually /media/disk), and that directory would contain all your pictures.
