Question about Linksys WRT160N Wireless Router

Weak wireless signal - WRT160N is a piece of trash

Wireless connection on WRT160N simply does not work. The signal is weak and unstable. There are many postings on the web related to underperforming wireless communication by this router.
I got a replacement (after a torture from Linksys 'tech support') but it has the same problem. My previous two routers by Linksys worked well for 5-6 years without any problems.
I strongly recommend to avoid this model.

We found Linksys wifi units to be unusable a few years ago. I had a stack of them that the wifi had died or was unstable or short ranged and none of these were more than a year old. They have had quality problems for about 5 years. Tech support is handled overseas and consists of them reading off of cheat cards. If you get through to a tech you will find them not to understand any technical jargon and once not even normal non technical english.

Our "fix" (and what I'd reccomend if you want to avoidl headaches) was to yank out all remaining Linksys units and replace with a different brand. We didn't see any difference with the models, they all failed in some way. I don't know what happened to the company but they used to have a very good product. They don't have that now.

You may want to check and see if alternative firmwares wil work on the router such as dd-wrt check http://www.dd-wrt.com
They make 3rd party firmwares that work much better and are full of extra features, one of which will let you bump up the signal strength.

Compaq nc6000 wifi connection very unstable

There are a few things that can cause you to lose wireless connection with your wireless router. 1. Weak signal strength, check the signal strength on your wireless card. If it is weak move the wireless router away from brick or concrete walls and if possible locate the wireless router higher up. 2. Have you secured your wireless router from people near your from unauthorized access? i.e. change the default password, setup encryption use WPA2 or WPA, change the default SSID, and turn off SSID broadcast, and for added protection, enable MAC address filtering which allows only the MAC address/es of your wireless card/s to connect to your wireless router. 3. You could be getting interference from electrical sources such as air conditioners, arc welders, washing machines etc. If so, the power supply to the wireless routers and computers etc should be connected to a surge protection power board, better still connect your computer equipment to an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). 4. Check the channels of the wireless routers and access points in your area and change the broadcast channel on your wireless router to an unused channel or one that is currently used but has the weakest signal strength. This will minimize interference with your wireless router from other wireless routers and access points in your area.

how far is your computer to the DSL wireless router? If it is too far and signal becomes to weak you won't be able to connect. And also make sure that there is no metal, concrete wall in between, it will block signal too. Good luck Thanks

Hello,
Please be sure your router is not too close to your cordless phone.
They both works on similar frequencies and the router can become unstable.

Hi everyone, I have a D Link DSL 2640U wireless router.I have been facing problems with connection stability for some time...the problem is that I have to keep my laptop switched on, so that I don't loose...

An unstable connection can be caused by any number of things, especially a weak signal.
Try moving the wireless router higher location away from concrete walls and or to a central location.

I cannot connect to the internet on any wireless computer

I would try a master rest of the router. There is a reset button on the back. Hold in for about 5 seconds. You will need to reconfigure your router this should work. If this doesn't work make sure you have the correct ssid and password for wireless network. Here is a link for setting up the wireless router.

I am running qwest DSL through a Linksys wrt160N that is brand new. it will work next to the router, but not upstairs or in the basement which is less than 15 meters. The upstairs bedroom is directly above...

If you have concrete floor slabs the the wireless signal from the Linksys will have a difficult time penetrating the floor slabs.
The wireless card in the computers will show a low signal strength.
Try altering the Linksys aerial to a horizontal position and also positioning the Linksys to another location.

You could be getting interference form other wireless sources, check the wireless channels of other wireless router/access points in your area. If they are broadcasting on the same channel then configure your Linksys to broadcast on an unused channel or one that has the weakest signal strength.
If none of these methods work then I would suggest you run network cables from the Linksys to upstairs and downstairs and not use the wireless connection.
If network cabling option is not an option then consider extending the wireless range with wireless repeater access points.

My Acer Aspire notebook keeps losing its internet connection. I have used 2 different routers and the signals were strong on both, so it's not that. I've also downloaded what I took to be the appropriate...

If you are using the supplied Acer program to setup your wireless, I would suggest removing the program. In most cases, removing their software does not remove the drivers, and thus, Windows Zero Configuration will take over the wireless.
WZC, in my opinion, works very reliably and has solved this type of issue in the past, although it is not the only reason for disconnects. For instance; a weak signal and a lot of interference from neighboring networks can cause your wireless to become unstable.
If this doesn't fix your connection issue, you may have an issue with the wireless card itself.

Limited or no connectivity to the internet. my setup: the telephone port is approx 30m from where i need internet access. Originally I had a dlink wireless router set up but was connected via cable, now...

On which port of the D-link router did you plug the WRT160N router?

Do this setup.

Disconnect the WRT160N from D-link.

Connect a computer to port 1 of the WRT160N. Access the setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 on the address bar. you may need to type in the username and password for WRT160N. on the setup page Change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1. save the settings.

Connect a cable from port 1,2,3 or 4 of the D-link router to the Internet port of the WRT160N. turn off everything then turn them on starting from cable modem>D-link >WRT160N then computer.

You should be able to access the internet.
