1 Answer

With my jenn air side by side jcd2389ges the fan is working but cold air is blowing. also, the compressor hums about every 5 or 10 minutes and dims the light abit in the refrigerator. i think it may be the start or overload relay assembly. how do you get to that part.

Basically, you need to pull the fridge out and remove the lower access panel on the back of the fridge.

You'll be able to see the compressor and the start relay and capacitor assembly mounted to the compressor. Here's a line drawing of your fridge, along with the parts list breakdown.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=JCD2389GES&productCategoryId=0165000&brandId=1266&modelName=SIDE-BY-SIDE-REFRIGERATOR&diagramPageId=00001&componentDescription=COMPRESSOR&documentId=M0603018&backToLink=Return%20to%20Sub%20Components%20list

I would check the relay to see if it's working OK, as I would lean toward the capacitor being the part that is failing. However, based on the age of the fridge, I'd tend to replace both the relay and the capacitor at the same time, since they're both old and the likelyhood of the other component failing is pretty good at this point.

Since it's a pain to work in the underside of the fridge, to me, it's well worth doing the job once and not having to have the fridge fail and spoil the contents when you least expect it. My take is that the extra part is well worth the added cost when compared to the value of perishable food in the fridge.

Just remember to unplug the fridge before doing any servicing or reaching into the underside, as those little fans hurt like heck when they nick your arm when they start up unexpectedly! There is a small metal clip that holds the relay and capacitor on the compressor, so don't lose that spring clip when you pop it off to remove the relay and capacitor.

You should be able to just plug the new one in place and swap the wires on the old cap for the new one, wire for wire, without any problem. I usually snap a quick digital picture for reference, if my memory isn't working well that day.

Check the parts list for your precise replacemente parts, as there are a couple of different parts, based on the particular model number and series, etc.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

If you hear it trying to come on, (the lights may even dim more than normal) followed by a "tink" noise, it's the compressor.

Jenn Air - JCD2389GES Side by Side - Freezer cold, refrigerator not cooling. No real frost buildup in Freezer - took back panel off and no frost on coil... Compressor is very warm. Fan is blowing on...

Sounds like a bad overload/relay . On the compressor , with the refrig unpluged , pry off the box on the side of the compressor with 2 or 3 wires going to it . If you have a meter that beeps on the continuity setting , touch the 3 compressor pins 2 at a time . If no beep , compressor is bad . If a beep from either of the 3 pins to the copper lines connected to the compressor , then the compressor is shorted . If all 3 pins beep , replace the overload/relay pt # 12002784 .
NOTE : if you do not have access to a meter , shake the relay ( black piece ) and listen for rattle noise . If rattles , its bad .

Jenn Air JCD2389GTB side-by-side refrigerator freezing & cooling

Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay. Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

I have a jenn-air jcd2389ges that is not getting cold.it runs and works but is not getting cold ..

If the freezer is staying cold it sounds like a defrost system problem. A bad timer, heater or thermostat can cause frost to build up on the coils and block air flow to the refrig side. Check out ACMEHowTo.com for troubleshooting the defroster problem.

My freezer is not working properly with clicking sound.

The clicking sound is probably the compressor relay trying to start the compressor. When the lights dim, the compressor is trying to start and hence, pulling power from the rest of the unit. If the compressor has a start capacitor, that could possibly be the problem. If not, the compressor itself should be replaced.

If the defrost cycle was stuck on then the compressor would not be humming trying to start. You may have a shorted compressor. Especially if its a frigidaire they are known to have the worst compressors. You can use a meter to check your compressor windings. You can check for a short by scratching the paint off the compressor and checking from each terminal to the bare metal on the compressor. If you have continuity then its shorted. Also check continuity from each pair of pins on the compressor. Good Luck _MJ_

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

JENN-AIR BLOWS WARM AIR

Hello,

Towards the bottom of the freezer is the water diversion tray for when it defrosts. It is usually made of glass but may not be. Lift that up an see if it is blocked by frozen water ice blocking the cold air vent that recirculates and also feeds into your refrigerator.

If this doesn't help wait long enough and one of the other experts on the site will help you. If it does solve your problem I wouldn't be too surprised as I've seen this so many times.

Well, regards and good luck,
Worldvet
