Question about First Alert Home Security

1 Answer

I have a First Alert system to which I do not have a security company servicing it. My problem is if I open certain windows either the big alarm sounds or the panel will go off beeping every hour where I have to get up and hit "off". I don't have a code to punch in since the system was here when I moved in. I want to know if I can avoid all this (especially the big alarm going off) if I disconnect all those little wires in the connection box. I was going to do it, but thought that the big alarm might sound.

If you want to kill the system, you need to remove its power. First remove AC power by unplugging the alarm's transformer (should be close to the "connection box"). These transformers are often screwed into the outlet to make them harder to remove, so you may need a screwdriver to do this. Next, disconnect the backup battery (located inside the "connection box") by pulling the negative lead off of the battery. This should disable the system.

How much a home alarm system cost?

the actual cost of an alarm system varies by company. most companies want the monthly monitoring revenue and offer the installation and equipment as an incentive for signing up with the service. to purchase equipment directly can vary greatly by type of equipment, number of devices and services wanted. your best option is to get at least three quotes from and compare what you are getting for you dollar. most alarm contracts for monitoring auto-renew after the initial term so you want to watch for that. most often batteries and acts of nature are not covered under any warranty.

How to Operate a Home Security System Without a Contract

Many homes have alarm security system installed, even though the current tenants may not have been the ones who paid for it. Some did pay for it but just can't afford the high monthly cost of alarm monitoring. Many people don't realize that once the alarm security system is installed only the monthly monitoring fee stands in the way of free home security. The alarm system still works without monitoring, and it is easy to configure on your own.
  • Install the dial capable motion detectors in place of the entryway motion detectors. The mounting directions and hardware will be included in the motion detectors' packaging. Often the old motion detector's hardware will mount the new one.
  • Connect phone lines to the new motion detectors as instructed by the manufacturer. Usually the lines connect from the new motion detectors to a phone or third-party dialer.
  • Program the dialer or the dial-capable motion detectors to dial the phones of your choice. Your cell phone is usually the most important phone number to program into the dialer to alert you quickly if there is an intruder.
  • Arm the alarm as you normally would. If there is an intruder, the new motion detectors will sense the movement and will dial your phone to alert you.
  • Tips & Warnings

    • Consider replacing the motion detectors that cover the windows and alternate entry and exit points, especially if you have a large home or one with several different entry doors.
    • If the dialer-enabled motion detector is capable, program a second and third phone number into the dialer to maximize effectiveness. Dialing your cell and your neighbor's home phone, for example, would be more effective when you are away from the area.

Are monitoring services provided by all alarm installation companies?

Most of the home security system companies provide monitoring services, but there are yet more which depend on a third party monitoring facility. Be sure to ask the company whether they provide the monitoring services and get a confirmation.

I can get the cell back up to work on my simon 3

The vell module is not like a cell phone. It is specifically set up to go to the alarm.com network. You need to have an alarm company involved. Alarm.com can send you e-mail or tect messages if you have a smartphone, but you are going to be about $25-$30 per month to get that service.

We just moved into a house and it has an alarm system that has westinghouse on it. There are sensors on every door and window down stairs. We have no idea how to turn it on and get it set up.

Call an alarm company like ADT. If they can use it they will. it will require some minor reprogramming and they will check all sensors, if the use it. 1-800-ADT-ASAP.

Telephone disconnected from first alert professional alarm system

The phone wires run from directly from the telephone company connection to the alarm on the red and green. They return on the other two wires. These wires are hooked to your home phones. That's the UL way to do it. The alarm is supposed to be the first device on the telephone line. You can just run a phone line to the alarm panel. There probably is a diagram inside the cabinet door or a phone jack very near the alarm.

Open your alarm cabinet, inside is a battery. Replace it with the same sized battery. it is probably a 12V 7ah battery. You should be able to find one for less than $30 locally.
