If you are able to produce a self test print, this is good since it illustrates that the cartridges are electrically stable...if you observe any 'E' or 'V' error states (i.e. "E xx" or "V162" for example), this may indicate there is possibly an internal electrical problem with one of the ink cartridges. Refer to your user guide if E/V error messages are displayed.
If, after following the suggested ink monitoring/level reset procedures, you still have an error condition which prohibits regular printing, then the ink cartridge probably has internal electrical damage (micro-electronics failure); such a failure is unrelated to the ink cartridge refilling process. Typically, when the cartridge fails the problem is 'masked' by the ink out/empty condition so it can be difficult to distinguish between the two. Many cartridges eventually do encounter problems or failures, especially after their original ink is gone and they are re-used, and this is often unrelated to the refill process (i.e. typically ~2 years from original manufacturing date). If, following a reset of the printer via the 'Stop/Resume' button, printing is permitted but the 'Ink Low' indicator continues to be lit then one of the inks cartridges may be suffering from marginal internal electrical performance - a potential failure of the cartridge may eventually occur which will prevent printing.
However, if your printer works routinely after inserting a brand new PGI-40 black ink cartridge in it, then this will confirm root cause of failure as being limited to the ink cartridge iteslf.
CAUTION: Be advised, the use of compatible/clone cartridges (i.e. sold thru the internet from overseas) are known to be problematic and may cause printer errors and/or permanent PRINTHEAD failures. We do NOT suggest refilling these types of ink cartridges.....refilling of Canon original/genuine ink cartridges is only suggested!

The following procedures may be used to reset the Canon printer ink level monitoring following the installation of a refilled Canon 30, 31, 40, 41, 50, 51, 210, 211, 240, or 241 integrated ink cartridges. In most cases, the error/alert will need to be cleared to enable printing. Ink waste container reset procedures are also provided below.
NOTE: for multi-cartridge installation, the procedure(s) may need to be repeated twice.
For PGI-5, PGI-9PBK, CLI-8, PGI-220 CLI-221 PGI-225 CLI-226 PGI-250 CLI-251 Cartridges: These are new Canon cartridges which have an embedded chip on each cartridge. If you just refill the ink, the printer will still reads the cartridge as empty. You have two choices:
Purchase a "refillable cartridge" from www.asapinkjets.com
BCH or other sellers. These refillable cartridges have an auto-reset chip (non OEM) and will reset automatically.
Use a chip resetter (e.g., search Canon + model number + resetter on eBay). Follow the instruction below to refill your original cartridge, and use the resetter to reset the chip. Inkjet Cartridges and Toner Refills
Filling is easy - but messy. I use No 40 cartridges for my pixma ip2200.
For the black cartridge, carefully remove the label. Drill a 2-3mm dia. hole in the depression in the top. With a syringe fill, using about 10ml of black ink. Plug the hole with a suitable bung and away you go!
You will however lose the ink level indication as it is not a genuine cartridge - but that is unreliable anyway.
Don't refill more than a couple of times as the foam inside the case eventually perishes and all the ink runs out.
Whilst the cartridge is out of the printer give the jets a wipe with a wet tissue. This is usually quite effective in removing dried on ink.
You can do the same with 41 colour cartridges but it is a bit more tricky locating the correct place to drill.
i have just filled my mx 310 with the jet tec refills as instructed....but do not insert the rubber bungs...instead put some celotape over the filling holes... then with a needle...pierce the celotape where the hole is( pin *****).... this set up is now able to breathe as originally designrd. Mine prints fine now this has been done (trial and error), but i might try better quality ink next fill. Its also wise to use glossy paper 230gsm or over for good results.
