Start Menu tips in windows 7

Start Menu tips Many people overlook the Start Menu, rarely using it except as a jumping off point to run an application or get to the Control Panel. But there's actually plenty you can do with it.
Search the Internet from the Start Menu Note: This tip relies on the Group Policy Editor, which isn't available in some versions of Windows 7. Thus, this tip will not work if you have the Home Premium, Starter, or Home Basic editions of Windows 7.
The Start Menu's search box is a convenient way to search through your PC -- but you can also have it do double-duty and perform Internet searches as well. To enable this feature:

1. In the Start Menu search box, type GPEDIT.MSC and press Enter to run the Group Policy Editor.

2. Go to User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Start Menu and Taskbar.

3. Double-click "Add Search Internet link to Start Menu," and from the screen that appears, select Enabled. Then click OK and close the Group Policy Editor.

4. From now on, when you type a search term in the Search box on the Start Menu, a "Search the Internet" link will appear. Click the link to launch the search in your default browser with your default search engine.

Once I have logged on and I am working on one of the various programs the start menu disappears. The only way that I can get the start menu back is to restart the computer and then it disappears again....

This is not a problem with your T40.

This is a configurable options in Windows.

You can program the start menu to disappear and reappear when you bring the mouse in close proximity to the area where your start menu has been configured to appear, either on the bottom, left, right, or top of the desktop and which feature can be reconfigured by left clicking on the initial appearance or a subsequent appearance of the start menu and indicating your preference.

Blackjack II blank start screen

Hi dogbyte,

For some reason, certain Windows Mobile (Standard) devices don't like "list" format for the Start Menu.

Give this a try:
1) Remove the battery for 1-2 minutes. (This allows any cached memory to clear)
2) Power the device back up.
3) Before openning ANY other apps, navigate to Start > Settings > Display > Start Menu Style
4) Change this value from "List" to "Grid"
5) Click Done twice, then click the Home key.
6) Give the Start menu another try. (Does this resolve the issue?)

Another forum suggested that Windows Mobile seems to be a little picky about which application appears first on the Start Menu. If you have any custom applications installed, it's possible WinMo's start menu just isn't playing nicely.

Hope this helps!
