Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model
IF YOU HAVE THE ENGINE APART YOU MUST LINE THE TWO DOTS FACING EACH OTHER THE PISTON MUST BE AT THE TOP OF THE CYLINDER FROM THERE PLAFCE THE CAM IN WITH THE DOTS ON THE CRANK AND THE CAM FACING EACH OTHER. YOUR ENGINE IS NOW IN TIME. NOTE: THE DOTS MUST BE PERFECTLY IN LINE

There is no ignition timing setting on this engine. just ensure the crank keyway is in good condition ( as they have a tendancy to sheer off and spin). then place a business card between the coil and flywheel, loosen off coil let it settle against magnets, tighten then remove card.
