Question about Computers & Internet

In the 1990s, I began to compile info for a family genealogy. I purchased several Family Tree Maker CDs. Now, following 8 years, I am unable to read them. I have version 6 of FTM software.

Try saving a copy of your family tree as a .GED file. for example "familytree.ged" onto a USB drive or disk, then put said disk in your MAC, open family tree maker and try and import your tree.

Files using the .ged extension seem to be the most portable.

MY OLD COMPUTER WINDOWS XPS RUNS FTM VERSION 10 FINE. MY NEW PC HAS WINDOWS 7 WILL NOT PERMIT INSTALLATION IS THERE A WAY TO INSTALL VERSION 10 ON WINDOWS 7?

The short answer is yes, Family Tree Maker 2010 is fully compatible with Windows 7.
The Family Tree Maker team has been working with Windows 7 for several months-even prior to the release of Family Tree Maker 2010. Since the "Release to Manufacture" (RTM) version of Windows 7 was released last August, we have done additional testing in our labs as well as with alpha and beta customers with no indication of incompatibility. Family Tree Maker 2008 and 2009 are also compatible with Windows 7.
As a point of interest, it may be helpful for people to know that we continually test Family Tree Maker with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
If you find a problem while running Family Tree Maker on your operating system, the best course of action is to contact customer support which can usually help you identify and solve the problem.

Swift FAmily Ancestry v 2.0

I found a few places you can buy it, though none of them seem to specify if it's version 2.0.

You can purchase and download it directly from here: http://my-buy-it-now.com/products-page/downloads/swift-family-ancestry-family-tree-maker-downloadable/

Or you can order boxed versions to get shipped to you from these places:
disks o plenty
Amazon

Also, it looks like Swift Family Ancestry creates files in gedcom file format. Many other genealogy programs can open that file format, so if you found a different program that you liked better, you may be able to open your file with that other program, also.

Cant install family tree maker

Hi, I have found some hints. It looks like Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 has to be installed on your system Take a look at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/FTM-TECH/2007-12/1197479889 and http://genforum.genealogy.com/install/messages/18590.html This error is a typical mistake for setup routines and I think the installation routine was not tested good enough by the manufacturer.

As your software improves so does the programs that you are using. Go to the Tree Maker website and download the program for windows xp and there is a update file that lets you upload your information from previous versions you have used. I hop this is helpful and Good Luck

mcdevito75 here, I would figure you could if it's on Disk (CD) If it is, simply un-install it on your old computer and install in your new computer. Hope this helps.
