Very noisy 'back-up' hard drive

My Iomega 250GB is an external hard-drive I use for automatic back-up. It is now making strange noises, but is out of warranty. Can I do anything to repair?

Dear
Generally hdd is non-repairable. You must place the hdd in a fixed place. it will make ur hdd long-lasting.

500gb Iomega External HD began making a strange whirring noise about 6 months from the date of purchase and now my pc doesn't even recognize it as being there. I can't get to any of my pictures and music.


the drive is failing,its hard to recover something (15% recovery is me being optimistic) you can try using recuva as a last ditch attempt to get your files (http://www.piriform.com/recuva). best of luck :)

-it sounds like your external drive had a head crash. The noise is normally grinding noise.

The external hard-drive is "plug-and-play", and Windows XP/Vista/7 all support "plug-and-play".
Thus, it should automatically be detected by Windows.

So, what's your "real" problem? Symptoms? Error-messages? What happens? What does not happen?
