Bad Solder A friend of mine has a Hitachi 53UWX10B and ran into the convergence IC problem. He unwisely attempted a self repair and really screwed up the pcb. He then calls me to laugh and point since he didn't ask for my help in the first place... Anyway, is there any way possible to replace the whole pcb that the dcu sits on? If so, do they sell a replacement with a dcu and ic's already on the pcb? If not, is it as simple as ordering a new pcb unsoldering the old dcu buying the IC replacement(s) and resistors for the board and soldering them back? Alternately, is there anywhere to look for that might find working parts from broken tv's or remanufacture broken tv parts? working parts from broken tv's or remanufacture broken tv parts?

Yea, i know i'll replace again and diagnose and reflow some connections if i can't just find a replacement, however, i don't want to spend too much time helping him out.

Thanks for your help guys, i replaced all of the resistors and the IC's and then checked every connection with the multimeter. In some cases I had to reflow some of the connections on the pcb and it is now working great! Additionally, however, the magic focus still errors out with an error code number 3 any ideas?

I know of one company that deals in selling remanned boards. Do a Google search on: PTS Electronics. I used to work for them and they may have what you need at any time; may cost ya though.

i would also replace the IC with the stronger ones stk392-180's and i would replace both no matter what.

i know my magic focus still errors out, i thought it might be because i put in stronger valued ic's

When using majic focus the blue doesnt focus right

Simple answer for this question:

Magic focus is for Convergence and attempts to adjust at about 16 points on the screen---if it does not help the two convergence chips this set uses need to be replaced---small chance if either chip shorted you may have a bad resistor near them also.

See attached photos of convergence problems --no two look the same but you will now know if your problem.

I have replaced chips in hundreds of these Hitachi sets--about the only real issue the sets have--life span on the chips is 5-7 years.

If you can solder and are moderately handy this can be a do it yourself repair--Parts (see photo of chips) cost will be under 25 dollars and the fix for a first time person about one hour.

Happy to help and assist you if you decide to fix it yourself.

Chips look like these and may have the stk-392-150 number on them, a stronger version of the one seen in the photo
tip

"double vision" caused by bad solder points on convergence chips (check before...

Before you order new convergence chips to try to fix the double vision or 3D look on your tv check the solder points for the chips. If you are able to smack the side of the tv or tap the heat sink for the chips and it corrects the problem than chances are the chips are fine butone or more of the solder points are bad. When I looked at the joints for the chips I noticed hairline cracks around the base of the joint. Re-soldering the joints for the convergence chips solved my problem.

Red horizonal convergence tilts instead of adjusting evenly.

For your hitachi unit one of the convergence IC is bad along with couple of low value resistance on
the convrgence board.

Good luck

Hitachi 53UWX10B 53 convergence color lines dont move w\RC

After replacing IC's, double check the solder connections for bridging or no solder on pin(s). Check all bias resistors (low ohmage). Make sure you have your VCC voltage, should have a positive/negitive voltage of about 24 v on each IC and +38v.Also, make sure all cables are plugged in and fully seated

Note: All bias resistors are very low ohms eg; 3.3, 1.8, 2.2 make sure correct value, very important.
If can't adjust still CPU digital convergence board (near ic's) shielded may be defective.
