Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

PS3 help My $500 80gig (old model, four ports and backwards compatibility) PlayStation 3 turns on, but doesn't show any audio and video. One day I was on the menu screen and all of a sudden the screen froze but the audio was still OK. After that I turned it off and then turn it back on, but i wasn't getting any video and now audio. I tried AV, component and HDMI cable, but still doesn't work. However, after an hour of keeping the system turned off, the game works back to normal condition, but soon it repeats the same problem of the screen freezing. WTF! I already know the holding-the-power button technique, but i still get nothing. HELP!

It sounds like your ps3 could be overheating, if you turn on your ps3 and are able to play a game anywhere from 1-10 minutes then the audio goes away and eventually it just freezes.. you might have a problem, the same thing happened to me, the best thing to do is send it in if still under warranty!

Sounds like the video board needs to be re-set it is locked into what ever setting it was in. i have seen a few ways to do the power button trick and this seem to work best!!!
follow theses instructions to a "t" and it should work for you.
1. Turn Off in back (wait few seconds for it to re-set)
2. Turn on in back
3. Turn on in front and hold your finger on it 'till it turns off again -
(you get the beep on then the three beeps for reset and it will eventually beep again and turn off)

4. Turn off in back (wait few seconds for it to re-set)
5. Turn on in back
6. Turn on in front hold finger for three beeps

also have you been to the default screen after doing a power button push for three beeps from stand by mode?

As all of these solutions sounds good I can tell you that about 50% of them will be getting to the restore menu and restoring the default settings, however; the other 50% is yet to be figured out at least on our end. Reflowing is not the answer as I have a reflow machine and it will not fix a no video/audio issue. I have had several no video/ No audio and have reflowed the entire board and nothing. Now on the YLOD reflowing in about 60-70% of the cases will work the other 30-40% is component failure and in that case you are almost certainly better off to just get another board.

My son wants a ps3, but i understand you cant play ps2 games on it. is this true?

Newer model PS3 systems are not backwards compatible. but if you can find the very old original model used then it will be backwards compatible with some of the PS2 games but not all. Older models are hard to come by though.

Best bet is to just keep your old PS2 along with any new system you might buy.

Xbox 360 is compatible with a large selection of its older Xbox games but recommend you get a new slim model Xbox 360 if you go that route.

Is there anyway of getting older version of ps3 os that is backwards compatible

If I understand your request, backwards compatibility can not be achieved by installing a different version of the PS3 OS.
You have to buy a 20GB, 60GB or 80GB model that supports backward compatibility.
A quick search of Google Products turns up a bunch of backward compatible PS3s for sale.

My ps3 used to be backwards compatible for ps1-ps2 and ps3 now it only plays ps3.why?and how do i get it back?

is it the 60 gb model?? that is the only one that did backwards compatibility. all others dont. if u do have the old 60gb then maybe sony got rid of it on the firmware updates. go on the ps3 website and update an older firmware and see if that works.

My ps3 won't let me play ps2 games. is there anything that can be done?

Unfortunately, no. Sony built the PS3 to only play PS3 games, so no backwards compatibility. Maybe in the future though, they might release an update.

Not unless you have an early model PS3 that was backwards compatible. The newer versions of the Ps3 do not have backwards compatibility. Sorry.

PS2 games not working on 80G Platstation 3

Though the ps3 80g is backwards compatible,it does not play back all ps2 games. go to sony's website,i believe they have a list of games that are,and are not compatible.also make sure your ps3 has all the latest software updates.if you have it hooked to the internet im sure it does
