Question about GE JVM1650 1000 Watts Microwave Oven
The time display flutters when running and then shorts out after a couple seconds of running. I opened it up and made sure all of the connections were good and it seems to have temporarily solved the problem. A service man said that the Mag Tube is bad and that it is covered under warrantee for 10 years but he would also replace the capacitor and diod when replacing the mag tube which would cost 150 bucks. Can I just replace the mag tube without also replacing the diod and capacitor?
> but he would also replace the capacitor and diod when replacing the mag tube
Most of the time replacxing them all is done due to ignorance about how to actually test devices, a mistaken notion that it's somehow necessary, or to pad the bill.
The diode may be necessary in some cases (if it tests bad) but the capacitor is almost certainly not needed.
When a capacitor fails, it almost always shorts. If so, the fuse would blow when you peress "Start" to begin cooking.
I've rarely (if ever) seen one fail without shorting.
If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then GE manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.
If you're doing this yourself, G.E. will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.
Be persistent. You may have to speak with a supervisor.
You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.
