Question about Zyxel Prestige 660R Router (P660R)

1 Answer

I had Embarq set up a Internet connection that uses a Zyxel 660R DSL modem with one static IP address. We wish to place a web site on a Windows 2003 Server. I can access the Internet from the server. However I can not access the simple web page that is on the server. Received no documentation at all on how to set up the Zyxel DSL/modem/router. Just the IP address, subnet and gateway address (on a 3 by 3 inch yellow sticky)that was installed in the modem. Can anyone tell me how to setup the system to serve out web pages ???? Thanx

My, thanx for your prompt reply. The server is about 30 miles away and I will be working on it in the morning.

Generally a ADLS or Dsl unless its SDSL that has the same up and down speeds. So unless its a SDSL it won't be much of a webserver as most dsl connections have very limited upload - the pages and files may load slowly.

    *********
Don't expect a very heavy load. This is just for testing.
    *********

If you do a start -> run -> type cmd, press ok -> type ipconfig
what do you see as your ip and default gateway on the server machine are they to the direction of 192.168.xxx.xxx ?

    ********

I set up the server Local Area Connection Properties on the Windows Server to:

    IP Addeess : 192.168.2.36
    Subnet Address : 255.255.255.0
    Gateway : 192.168.2.1

That is what I see when I type ipconfig.

If they are, then you are most likely behind a NAT and the port 80 is most likely blocked by a firewall on the router.

You would have to connect to the dsl modem, most likely thatshttp://InsertTheIPaddressOfDefaultGatewa...

For examplehttp://192.168.1.1 might be it. the ipconfig will tell you what the default gateway ip is.

you will be asked to login, unless someone changed the settings you should be able to login with admin admin or admin 1234 or similiar default codes.

Then try turning off the firewall or look for port forwarding, make sure port 80 is forwarded for the server machine or look for DMZ feature.

    ******
I have been able to access the modem software byhttp://192.168.2.1 and 1234 is the password.
I don't have any manual for the modem software . So don't know how anything about:

    1. Behind a NAT.
    2. Port 80 blocked by firewall on the router.
    3. DMZ feature.

    But will check tomorrow.

Okay, port 80 is used for web service, so the firewall must be blocking other computers from connecting to the computer, and by default they try to connect to the port 80 - which is probably being blocked. this is the port used world wide for all web sites, with rare exceptions.

The DMZ (demilitarized zone), it will say DMZ somewhere in the modem / firewall settings, this is a special feature that you can set for a spesific computers ip address, the ip address you set will not be filtered by the firewall in the router - so it will be unprotected in a sense but the pages should open, just make sure you have a software firewall on the server in that case. like zonealarm or similiar.

I have a ZyXEL EQ-660R-F1 and a Linksys Wireless Router (B BEFW1154) that I'm trying to hook up. Can you tell me what I need to do?

Who is your ISP (internet service provider)? Anyway, it is possible to get your set up working. ZyXel is the DSL modem gateway and Linksys, your router/wifi. If you are able to get online by hooking up directly to the Zyxel, then it is possible to add the Linksys to the system.
Dont hook up the Zyxel to the Internet port of Linksys just yet. First you have to configure the Linksys by connecting your PC to it with a cable. Boot up the PC.
Open web browser and enter the address 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. This is the default address of the Linksys. username = admin and no password. It is probably the same as the Zyxel which causes the conflict.
The first set up page may look something like this below.
Change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1
Then click apply...From now on the Linksys IP address is 192.168.2.1.
Now you can connect the Linksys internet port to the Zyxel. Reboot the Linksys and Zyxel.

Your PC should be on the internet after that. To check/setup wifi, you need to log back into the Linksys using the new adress x.x.2.1

Diffrent between Dynamic&static ip address

Static IP address is usually a single IP address provided by the ISP to you, which can be configured so that you can run a web server (host web sites etc), or access your home computer from any where in the world ( your computer and internet should be on ).

Dynamic IP address is usually IP address provided by the ISP to your DSL modem / computer (for dialup modems) for that internet session, next day or next time you connect the IP address will be a different one. (usually home internet connections are Dynamic IP based.

In a typical home environment if you have one wireless adaptor and planning for a wireless repeater its better to configure dynamic IP address in the repeater (so that you repeater will acquire IP address from the wireless adaptor)

How can I setup my Linksys 54g v2.2, with my ZyXel 660r modem from embarq so that I can use my laptop with the routers wifi?

First of all you need to set you modem router to bridge mode. go to this link will explaine in more detail
http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?articale=69205

remember to change the linksys router ip to 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.0.1 somthing different from the modem .
Hughes modems are all set to 192.168.0.1 so simply setting the linksys router to default 192.168.1.1
you need to change the linksys router IP to somthing different 192.168.0.1

Zyxel 660HW DSL LED keeps flashing

Try to change the Local or LAN IP Address of your Zyxel to 192.168.5.1 and do not configure the Zyxel router for PPPoE Connection. It should be configured as Obtain IP Automatically or Automtic DHCP.

Am trying to set up a Windows 2003 server to serve web pages over the Internet. Have got a DSL line from Embarq. They installed a EQ-660R interface which is really build by Zyxel. I can reach the Internet...

In order to access your default web page remotely, port 80 "INBOUND" must be open to the internet.

To access your web server, two things need to happen.
The first is you or someone else must initiate a http request on port 80 using the public IP Address of your DSL connection.
Second, your router must forward that request to your servers internal ip address.

Ex. Lets say your public ip address is 24.39.45.10. In a browser window from a remote location, you enter the URL http ://24.39.45.10 The request will be sent to your router on port 80.

Your web server will not have the ip address 24.39.45.10 because it's on the private network side of your router. So, lets say the private ip address of you server is 192.168.1.100

You need to configure your router to take the http request coming from the internet on port 80 to ip address 24.39.45.10 and forward that request to 192.168.1.100. This is known as port forwarding.

You also need to configure the host header name of your "web page" so it knows it needs to display the web page.

Since we're just using ip addresses in this example and not an actual FQDN (fully qualified domain name), you would make a host header entry for the web page of 24.39.45.10.

To do this open IIS.
Navigate to the web site in question and right click on it then select properties.
On the website tab, ensure the port number is set to 80 and choose the appropriate internal ip address if you have more than one network adapter in the server.
Next click on the advanced tab and look for the heading Multiple identities for this site. This is where you enter the ip address 24.39.45.10.

If you have a fully qualified domain name, you would enter the domain name instead of the ip address as specified in this example.

Host header names are the key to running multiple websites from one physical server as long as it has the necessary horsepower to do so.

Hope this helps and isn't confising. If you're confused in any way, don't hesitate to ask for clarification.

This are some steps on how to setup your modem/router
New DSL Modem Available
Embarq is now shipping an updated version of the DSL Modem called the "660". It is smaller than the older model (645) and is much easier to setup.
A few years ago, Sprint/Embarq changed the way their servers communicate with the DSL modems. The new method is called DHCP, which is how the 660 modem works. The older 645 Modem used "PPPoE". So it's best to have the new 660 DSL modem.
The older 645 modem also had the same default IP address as the Linksys Router (192.168.1.1) - so you had to change one of the addresses to make them work together.
The new 660 DSL modem uses 192.168.2.1 as the default IP address. This does not conflict with the default IP address of the Linksys Router (192.168.1.1). Note that if you had changed the Linksys Router IP address to 192.168.2.1, then you will first need to reset it back to the default address 192.168.1.1.
If you call Embarq and request the new 660 DSL modem they will sent it to you at no cost. When you install the 660 DSL modem, you need to be sure that you power down the old 645 modem amd leave it off at least 1 hour before you plug in the 660 DSL modem. The Embarq server needs to "forget" the old 645 modem. After an hour, all you should have to do is plug in the new 660 modem and everything should start up properly.
Call Embarq Tech Support 1-877-646-3282 if you have problems setting up the modem. If the Internet Lights does not come on after a few moments - then call Embarq Tech Support.

P-661H-D3 zyxel problem?

The fact that it does not get an IP address almost certainly means that the router is KAPUT. You may try to add in a manuel address. In you network settings of your computer you can put the following IP addresses:
IP Address : 192.168.0.100
SUBNET MASK : 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY : 192.168.0.1
then try to see if you can connect to the internet (see if the internet light then comes on.)
Let me know if it works. I may still be able to help you after that.....

Port forwarding

well to start, your connection would possibly be ADSL and your zyxel is set to provide DHCP address on your network, so its router capabilities could be turned on.

if this is true, you may need to rework the connection settings.

here's a recommendation:

1.set your modem to bridge mode (bridge only)
2.this will then be allowing your linksys to manage your DSL connection through PPPoE
3.after so, your linksys router should get a public IP address for an internet IP when you go to status tab (not an IP address starting with 192.168.1.xx)

after so, you may reconfigure your port-forwarding.

the reason why you will need to set your modem to "bridged" only is that if it is not, your zyxel's firewall is also turned on, provided that the linksys' firewall is always on. so even if you define which port will be opened on the router, it will still be blocked by the modem's firewall.
