How to increase processor speed of a rooted android phone

For most smartphones, the processors are clocked at speeds much lesser than their maximum supported speeds to improve battery life. That also means you are not enjoying all the juice your phone can give you.

Lets see how you can overclock your android phone to unleash its full potential.

Important: Overclocking requires super user permissions and so your phone needs to be rooted.

SetCpu is the best app out there to overclock your android phone. Its sheer simplicity and useful options sets its apart from its competitors. You can either download it as a paid app from the Android market or simply download the zipped apk from XDA forums.

Using SetCpu. Once you install and start SetCpu, it will first show you a screen with two options. Unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise, simply select "Autodetect Speeds Recommended".

A screen will come up where you can change the maximum and minimum clock speeds and select the scaling method. SetCpu will automatically detect the maximum clock speed your processor supports.

Max - maximum clock speed.

Now its a bad idea to rush and drag the slider to its maximum in one shot. Although there will be no problems for most phones, it could lead to instability for some. Instead, try increasing the clock speed in small steps, running some heavy apps like games and if you don't see any instability, go back and repeat with increasing the clock speed. In case you find your phone going unstable at any speed, just set the speed to slightly below that value.

Min - Minimum clock speed.

Minimum frequency is the speed at which your phone will run when it is idle or no heavy apps are running. Setting it to a too low value can cause your phone to go slow with incoming calls, alarms and any other app that runs while idle. Generally it is advisable to set it to at least one third of the maximum speed your phone processor supports.

The scaling option determines how aggressively the minimum and maximum clock speeds will be applied. The drop down menu gives 5 options as below -

  1. OnDemand - Automatically sets the minimum and maximum based on load. This is the recommended setting.

  2. Conservative - Very similar to OnDemad except that the scaling is less rapid.

  3. Powersaver - Makes your phone run at min speed always to give maximum battery life.

  4. Performance - Makes your phone run at max speed always.

  5. Userspace - This option is useless as of now and is kept as a future option for apps to change clock speed that SetCpu doesn't use.
Once your phone looks comfortable with the new frequencies, you can use the "Set on Boot" option to enable the settings permanently.

There are many issues to consider when overclocking and the first is to be sure that you have extra cooling for your processor. On this motherboard I do not recommend overclocking but since ASUS says that it can be done I will try to give you some places to get information on your A7V880 system. If you do not have your user's manual, you can go to the link below and download one. . Leave the OVER_VOLT1 jumper on the motherboard on the default of pins 1 & 2. Refer then to section 2.4.5 on pages 2-21,22 of the User's Manual for Jumper Free configuration overclocking settings. In BIOS Setup I suggest a CPU Multiple of 10 or less. If you choose to use the AI Overclock Tuner instead, a setting of [Overclock 20%] or less would be best. The VCORE Voltage setting will depend on the specs for the CPU that you are using. If you don't know leave it at Auto. As I said before, overheating of the CPU is a problem in overclocking and you can monitor the temperature via the Hardware Monitor. Refer to section 2.5.6 on page 2-26 of the manual. Modern cpu overclocking normally does not exceed 20% safely unless you are willing to spend a lot of money on liquid cooling and frequent replacement of damaged processors. I would be interested in hearing whether you decide to overclock or continuing with your present settings.

Overclock fan speed question

The amount that you can overclock you're video card differes for each individual card. The limiting factors are temperatures and stability. If games start crashing, etc you should back off the overclocking. Also keep in mind the temperature of the card. Increasing fan speeds will lower the temperatures of the card. Increasing the fan speed (as long as you don't go beyond 100%) will not damage the card... It will be louder though. For the 9800gt, the maximum temperature before damage is 105 degrees C. Try to keep the temperatures at 80 or below optimally. Increasing the fan speed is the best way to accomplish this.

I want to overclock my acer aspire 5050 this the review: * Processor: AMD Turion64 x2 TL-50 (1.6 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache total, 256 KB on each core) * RAM: 1 GB 533 MHz DDR2 RAM (2 x 512 MB) * Hard...

I have the same system too. None of the tuners such as RIVA work well w/ integrated notebook card, and u r graphics card is pretty ghetto. I could however, download POWERSTRIP and tune up a minescule 300-400 MHz but it won't let me access memory clock. More than this I could do no further overclocking.

Raising stock processor speed.

Sorry my friend but Dell doesn't support overclocking. You need a new motherboard and power supply and a better cpu heatsink to overclock your Dell. You would need extra fans too. They lock there BIOS settings as far as 1:1 clocking to prevent troubleshooting issues and they want you to buy something faster if you want something faster. I don't know how old your machine is but any attempt at overclocking would also void the warranty. They even recommend using just one brand of memory even though there are many that would work.

Strangest Overclock Failure Problem Ever

Understand that not all computers can be overclocked. For one, laptops are pretty much out of the question. Also, any OEM (original equipment manufacturer) computer, such as a Dell, HP or E-machine, will be virtually impossible to overclock, so your best bet for overclocking is to purchase or build a custom system, but keep in mind that some motherboards can't be used to overclock. Now let's begin.

The BIOS. Overclocking is best done in the computer’s BIOS. There are some software programs available which allow you to overclock inside the operating system, but the best results are achieved by changing BIOS settings. Usually you can get into your BIOS by pressing DEL (some systems may use F2, F10, or Ctrl-Enter) as soon as your computer begins the POST Here, you can change your FSB (front side bus), memory timings, and your CPU multiplier CPU Clock Ratio

Compatible processor

Yes, if you overclock you computer, I believe if you enter your bios of the motherboard, asus already has a pre overclock options. That is if your using a p4 2.8 ghz processor. You can not put a 3ghz processor and overclock it to a higher fsb, your motherboard will literally smoke up but, most motherboards probably can easily detect a non compatible CPU.
