You need a new hinge so the cover will sit down properly, or paper will jam anyway, but it sounds like there is still a scrap of paper on one of the sensors inside the ADF, you need to look with a flashlight down thru where the paper goes and also look up thru the slot with the ADF lifted.

There's one toward the rear that you can see with the lid lifted, there are two arms that dangle down thru a hole to the sensor when the lid is closed, the other is just over the ridge where the paper goes in the center after passing thru the feed rollers.

Adf has two hinges, wider on left and smaller on right.
the wider hinge may be broken and keeps cover up from left side or (adf side) check on support part of hinge you will see a metal pin holding hinge and cover together. of it is broken from there the lift support pushes the cover up and the black pin under the cover left of hinge doesn't press in so adf doesn't work.
you can press black pin on 8440 when i press black pin it moves scanner little bit.
try to make cover sit in place and put paper in adf it should respond.
hope this works for u.

Brother MFC-8860DN All-In-One Laser Printer showing document jam error

Doc jam error usually means a jam in the adf (auto doc feed) when feeding a fax or doc to copy.

The most common reason brother mfc,s of this configuration have doc feed issues is believe it or not the hinge that operates the lid/adf, specifically the left side one (looking from the front). Inside the hinge there are two springs exerting tremendous force on the hinge (that enables the lid to stay up by itself) however this force eventually slowly breaks the fulcrum point of the hinge which leads to the lid not closing properly which means a sensor under the lid does not activate properly resulting in the adf stopping and resulting in the machine registering a jam. the difference between the sensor activating or not can be as little as a millimeter and is not often disernable. the hinge needs replacing by a techo.

the other reason could be you just have dirty adf feed rollers, clean them with a cotton rag dipped in metho, open the adf lid and give the rollers a scrub. the rollers should have 'tread' on them similar to a tyre, if not they are worn and need replacing.

One other possibility is there may be a paper fragment left over from a jam removal still caught in the paper path and activating a sensor activator that tells the machine paper is coming or going. most commonly in the section where the paper is looping on its return journey back out of the adf, open the adf lid, have a look with a torch and see how you go.

Regards, Andrew.

Paper sticks half way when I try to FAx

Probably the left hinge is broken not letting the adf cover go all the way down and causing jams. A new hinge is #LP2403001, around $15 to$18.00

My printer says doc cover open on a mfc 8820d how should i fix.

You have to close the ADF. If the ADF is closed, then the left hinge is probably broken. Look for "MFC-8820D hinge" to find the solution in FixYa.

Jamming of paper using the Automatic Document Feeder

You may have a really tiny paper jam. You need to open up unit to get access to feeder properly. Use a torch, jams can be so small you can miss them. cheers lilacgerry

The fax does not pull the document

Strange.... Please check fax settings, if you have choosen the right paper size. It could affect the function of the adf. (see handbook when unsure how to do that).
