Yes replacement of the display board can be done provided the damage is limited to it as after the display is set in if there is any more issues you might be stuck to go forward by spending more.
So iwould advice that you get the printer estimated at teh brother service centre as they can swap and confirm.
This will be better as you can get and estimate with a confirmation with which you can decide..

Open the case,i don't sure were the cartridge is located but i think is easy to you to find it.When you found it, wipe the botton part of your cartridge use soft clothe for cleaning.Look at mannual to locate the cartridge.
Ok try see if this work.
With some Brother printers you can try this.
Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, and then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.
This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.
Some times this happens because of using cheap compatible ink cartridges if this is the case change the ink cartridges.
Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

1. Go to Printers and right click on Brother printer and choose 'Properties'
2. Click the 'Ports' tab and with proper Brother printer port highlighted click 'Configure Port'
3. In second field titled "Printer Name or IP Address" enter the IP address of printer*
4. Click 'OK' as need to exit out.
I'm using XP so this may be slightly different depeneding on your flavor of Windows. The main thing is to name the port with the IP address and not rely on name resolution.
Hope this works for you too!
* If you don't know your printer's IP address then you can go to your printer and under the 'Reports' section print-out the Network Configuration report to find IP address.
