Question about Panasonic AG-DS555 S-VHS VCR

1 Answer

Audio clipping during VHS (S-VHS) playback.

I am a new owner of a nearly brand new PANASONIC AG-DS555 unit. I love this thing. However, I am flying blind with the controls and settings as this unit did not come with an operating manual. My problem is that during playback of some VHS tapes (VHS and S-VHS), I occasionally get what appears to be audio clipping where the sound just cuts out completely. No distortion, just completely quiet. (Sometimes this occurs when there is a very subtle glitch on the tape but not always...sometimes the tape shows no problems. BTW, my older Toshiba 6-head VCR plays the audio fine). Anyway, in the lighted display panel on the front below the lit HiFi graphic, I notice the word LIMITER. I am wondering if one of the audio selections is incorrectly set. Is there a way to bypass or adjust what appears to be some kind of audio clipping (limiting)? There are lots of settings available on this pro VCR. Sorry for the amateur question, but without the manual, I am just not sure if I have everything set up properly. This thing puts out a beautiful picture, perfect still frames, and very nice audio. I just need to figure out the occasional audio clipping. Any help or advice, or can someone point me to an operating manual in original form or PDF. Thanks in advance for your help. Paul

Have you tried the Panasonic site, they have PDF (free) of user manuals?

It's at least 26 years old - unlikely that it can be serviced after this length of time.

I need the user manual for panasonic ag-ds555

I can't find one online either but the AG-DS850 manual should be extremely close if not the same (I can't see any differences in the front/rear controls except the model#): You can download the 850 manual here: ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/provideo/om/agds850_en_om.pdf

Rolling static pattern

Solved! (I hope??).
The cable from the Keyspan to the AG-DS555 deck had an extension cable - when this was removed, the rolling specks disappeared!!! I tested the same set-up on a JVC DV deck and didn't see any problem?? But I suppose that S-VHS is much older technology - I hope that this was it!

Guess the moral of the story is - check every cable!

No video output

AG-DS555s are plagued by capacitor failure problems on all the video boards in the deck. Replacement of all surface mount electrolytic capacitors is the solution, but before you try that, give the heads a good cleaning. It's amazing what a miniscule amount of dirt on the heads will do.
